  • This is bad because?

Because you're watching the time and your speedometer, not the kids running in front of your car.

  • Hold on a sec - this is in Bournemouth. Who gives a shit?

Haha! Just saw this, best point of the thread, think we can close it now =P

  • speed cameras for bikes are a load of shit though.

tell that to the coppers in Richmond park too then.

it's stupid, not all bikes have speedometers. so if you coast down sawyers hill on a geared bike and go over 20mph you can get done for "cycling furiously"

there's some serious piss-take going on in this country regarding traffic law relating to bikes

  • Because you're watching the time and your speedometer, not the kids running in front of your car.

If you don't know what time you're driving at, when the times listed are rush-hour times, driving is the least of your worries. If you see a flashing sign that says Cation: Children Crossing then you slow right the fuck down whatever time it is.

I know, I know, it's really immature of me, but is anyone else tempted to go out with the intention of getting that for a laugh?

My point is that if you need to be told to slow down when driving past a school when you can see that kids are coming out, you shouldn't be on the roads. We should be responsible, it's assumed we are not, so they put all of these ridiculous laws in place to try to keep us in line, when all we need to do is have some common sense.

  • All that you've said is all true, however you've gotta agree that there are many places where the speed limits are just ridiculous, plus why should people have to stick to a speed that's safe at a time where the roads are very busy when it is 2am and there's barely anyone else about? You can't just say that one speed is safe and 1mph above is unsafe, how about the many occasions where road conditions have been horrible (heavy rain/fog/ice) and people still continue to go at the speed limit not realising the danger they're putting themselves and others in, this has caused many large pile ups where people have been going too fast for the conditions, but under the speed limit, you can't just have one number that is safe for all conditions but is a realistic speed to be travelling at most of the time.

At 2am you should chill out. It is dark, you are tired, you need to have 100% control of your car. What is the rush?

  • I know, I know, it's really immature of me, but is anyone else tempted to go out with the intention of getting that for a laugh?

If I could have a criminal record, it would be for that. Can you imagine going to the US?

"Hello sir, welcome to the USA, oh wait says here you have a criminal record! Turn right aro.."

    "Check what it's for"

"Cycling furiou..? Ok, enjoy your stay sir."

    oh the lols.

  • We actually posted the topic last night for a bit of a giggle after we had a couple of beers, mainly for it complete ridiculousness.

  • My point is that if you need to be told to slow down when driving past a school when you can see that kids are coming out, you shouldn't be on the roads. Yesterday a 5-year old girl was killed in London by a hit and run BMW driver.

  • lol.
I got a fine on the way back from the track day for turning left at the bottom of Railton Road to go back up Herne Hill.

£60 for my troubles. Cunts, had no idea there were cameras there. I used to get fined for doing this sort of shit constantly. One of the reasons I no longer own a car. Never for speeding mind, but for turning left on no-lefts, where the no-left is utterly fucking pointless.

I tend to make up my own rules when driving and cycling, dependant on all factors as they present themselves to me at that precise moment. However, with more cameras, any room for intelligence is taken away from the person in charge of the bike/vehicle

    Cunts

I agree with you, but sadly people are thick as shit. Laws are probably the only way to stop them being awful.

Always the same with you trackies, always turning left.

I know to a lot of people it seems that i'm a car loving nazi, but i'm not =P At 2am, i'm very rarely tired, anytime i'm in a car, I always aim to be completely focussed and in complete control of the car, going 80mph on a motorway does not mean you're not in control of the car, nor is it unsafe in the vast majority of cases, I would never drive past my limits in a car (unless on a track of course). Sure, some people will want to chill out and relax and pootle along, and that's fine, but just because something suits one person it should be applied to everyone, I don't agree with people riding brakeless and wouldn't do it myself, but I let them do what they want, it's their choice.

  • I agree with you, but sadly people are thick as shit. Laws are probably the only way to stop them being awful.

+1 The driving test needs a serious rethink, it tests if people have the ability to drive on the roads, but it does little to test their attitude on the roads, and there's no way of stopping these attitudes from deteriorating over time.

Hopefully in the not too distant future public transport will be much more convenient that driving so that the only people left driving are those who enjoy it (note, people who enjoy driving are not the same as people who drive recklessly, I have no idea why so many think that, but apparently they do).

  • Mmcarthy, I am not accusing you of being a car loving nazi nor I am a car hater. I just know the damage that a car accident does having lost my 23-year old brother in one. My parents had to identify his body and only told me a few years later (I was 15 when he died) that he looked 20 years older and that they knew that he had suffered and that he was scared. It was 2am, he was probably going too fast, overtook a car, he hit a fog patch and had to avoid a car coming ahead. He was a very good driver and we were told that he had a very good reaction and avoided a much bigger accident, ie no one else died.

Too many people die this way.

Oh I wasn't picking you out or anything, just some of the repsonses from others that's all. I'm terribly sorry to hear about your brother, I have known a few who have died in similar circumstances, I agree that cars can cause huge amounts of damage in some situations, i'm just saying that we shouldn't be forced into line by the so many laws that aren't necessary, if you don't want to go whatever speed, don't, if you do, go, but accept the responsibility of your actions.

P.S. I'm not saying we don't need speed limits, I know that last bit reads a little like that.

  • Because you're watching the time and your speedometer, not the kids running in front of your car.

During the driving test you're supposed to demonstrate that you can stay safely within the speed limit whilst being aware of your surroundings. Would a device limiting your car to the area's speed limit make it easier ?

Re Cycling and speed limits - how can it be enforced when it's not compulsory to have a computer on your bike ?

  • Hobart, Tasmania.

    i kill you.

    This is bad because?

have you ever been fined $150 and a quarter of the points on your licence for doing something that was perfectly legal 2 minutes earlier? how accurate is your watch?

there's nothing wrong with having lower speed limits near schools, but it's a real pain in the arse when the rules change minute by minute and there is no actual warning (ie the signs don't change).

  • but accept the responsibility of your actions.

    ZLOL

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/uk/2007/jan/25/ukcrime.transport

In August 2004, lorry-driver William Ishani was fined £1,000 and banned for a year for causing the death of a family of four, including a nine-month-old baby.

A teenage driver who had never passed his test walked free from court despite having killed 15-year-old cyclist Anthony Wakelin in October 2002.

  • this is all getting very off topic... how many people have been killed by cyclists on Bournemouth's promenade?

and how many have been killed by dodgy fish'n'chips?

  • All that you've said is all true, however you've gotta agree that there are many places where the speed limits are just ridiculous, plus why should people have to stick to a speed that's safe at a time where the roads are very busy when it is 2am and you can't just have one number that is safe for all conditions but is a realistic speed to be travelling at most of the time.

I kinda agreed with you a bit here,

Because you're watching the time and your speedometer, not the kids running in front of your car.

But then you contradicted it a bit here.

We don't all have common sense. whos gonna decide whos right? lets get someone to do it for us. oh wait we do.

Just googled this out of interest and found:

    :'( sigh

If you can't trust yourself to drive responsibly, you shouldn't be driving a car. If you rely on a device to drive responsibly, you shouldn't be driving a car. Get a bus/tube/taxi instead.

  • We don't all have common sense. whos gonna decide whos right? lets get someone to do it for us. oh wait we do.

You don't know when you're at a speed that you find comfortable and are able to react to people turning out of side streets/people running on the road etc.?

Once again, people who can't trust themselves on the road shouldn't be on it.

@Ta2 - What are you trying to imply there? I know it sounds stupid but in the past people have assumed that I agreed with things like that, and I hope you're not trying to do the same, people like that should be charged with murder/manslaughter.
