Hello all,
Am new to the forum, but would love to join the ride. I've never been to Southend, so this should be fun.

Definitely considering this. Spent many a summer holiday in Saaafend. Let you know this weekend!

I'd rather leave at 7am.
It would be really helpful if you guys could leave earlier then those who would like to also go on the memorial ride can make it for 5pm easily, I don't mind moving the memorial ride an hour later as well, its not exactly going to be a long difficult ride as it'll pretty much just be a loop around central London.

I'd be up for an earlier start too

How are you all getting back? Train? If so, do I need to buy a ticket beforehand? Do they take bikes?
Pardon the question, but I'm American and haven't used the British rail system yet! :)

No response from the OPer about revising start time.
I am considering leaving proper-early, like 6am, or seven latest. I might start a sub list if everyone is OK with that. So we have choices: 6am or 9am. Makes for two smaller groups which is probably a good thing?
@AlienMo : You can buy a ticket beforehand, but you'd probably need to know which train you'll be on. So no, don't bother. I recall last year we got a two-for one price, some kind of weekend-seaside daytrip deal. So look out for that, everyone.
There can be problems with taking lots of bikes on trains. So nobody ask lots of questions of train staff, drawing attention to us bending the rules.. some trian staff will be officious if you hassle them. Just slip on wherever you can with as little fuss as you can manage. Also, at this time it's unlikely to be busy with other passengers going to London.
The last time people left in fairly small groups, some not hanging around much, some stopping for food, some then going to a pub too. So its wasn't a problem. -

+1 for early start, was gonna say exactly the same. When we went to Cambridge the roads were a bit busy. There is less traffic at 7am, so the ride out of london is just nicer early in the morning.

We'll be taking the BHF route, which goes out into Essex and won't be very busy at 9am or in subsequent hours, so I don't quite see the need for a 7am start.
It's also looking as if I might not be able to go on this one, TBC. :(

• #73
True. I just think 9am is too late. For me. Not trying to be divisive.
Also would mean that some people would be more likely able to make the memorial roll later on after doing this.
-
• #74
Having second thoughts about this, Oliver Schick's comment has prompted me to think we should stick together.
Would rather join the big ride than start a splinter and generate bad vibes! i guess, Hovis, wools, hoonz, we should only do this if, say, ten or more people want to. Otherwise I'd rather stick with the 9am and keep it in the fold. As I said up there, I was only floating the possibility, not demanding it.

If I can move the memorial ride to a 6pm start do you think you guys can make it back in time?
good work. i have to get back to londinium for an evening do. friend who emigrated is back for 4 weeks. windows of opportunity and all that.
edit:
also willing to backstop if necessary.
