Lightweight tent recommendations?

  • I'm looking some cheap tent and High Peak Minilite seems good option. Cheap, light and packs quite small size. I did see those couple post from Edscoble and it seems ok to me. Is it ok from your opinion because you have used it? Does it keep water out?
Would be great if I and my gf would fit in there and I think that we both might just fit in there. We both are quite small sized and of course can be close of each other.

  • I bought a hilleberg akto about ten years ago. Now we have a hilleberg nallo 3GT and my son sleeps in the little akto tent.
I cant reccomend hilleberg enough. I went everywhere in the akto, slept on deep snow for a few days, high winds, hot countries, never a problem.

  • You both won't fit in the High Peak Minilite, you'll more likely come in contact with the wall of the tent, and get wet (consolidation).

  • I want to buy a tent for bike touring for two of us in comfort + has a porch to keep the 2 bikes in. I know a lot of people leave them outside but I reckon I'm a bit too neurotic to do that. Got it down to a choice of two (I think) but I can't decide between them. Would be interested in peoples thoughts / any other suggestions.

Don't know if this one is a bit too big?

This one is a bit cheaper and lighter (but longer) but I wonder whether it'd accommodate us + bikes in comfort.

  • Not worth it, are you happy to carry all the extra weight just so you can keep a bike inside? it's nearly 4kg (2kg each), a huge weight that'll be noticable, and quite likely take up a lots of space in your panniers.

Better off getting one of those normal 2 person tent that tend to weight around 2kg, so you two only have 1kg of tent to carry (like the Talas 200).

If you're worried about bicycles getting stolen while you've having a nap, take precaution like an alarm combo lock, string tie to your arm, etc.

  • Cheers Ed, I think I'd be looking for a 3 person tent whatever. I'm quite a big chap so I reckon 2 of us + panniers could get pretty cramped otherwise.

  • If that's the case, check the ceiling height, being a tall chap you'd want enough room to manoeuvre around your other half without getting your knees in her mouth.

I reckon you can safely go for a two man tent, just check the length to correspond with your height.

  • This looks like a decent place to start, 2 man tent.

I'm looking for a tent around £50, 2 person and as light as possible.

  • Hello knowledgeable touring people.
My buddy and I want to go cycle east this summer. Just follow the rising sun for as far as we can go.

I have zero touring experience, he did a big west to east across the US last September.

I'm gradually picking things up in preparation and if you could help me out with a tent I'd be very grateful. You recommend I should spend upper-end of my beginner's budget on tents and I'm happy to do so for a modicum more comfort.

Terra Nova have a good reputation right?
What do you guys think of the Zephyros 2 lite?

    Thanks!

  • i have the terra nova jupiter bivi
    tiny 840g
will take you a panier an not much else, it is a great shelter easy to put up .. literally 30 seconds from bag to being inside and dry, and is made well
if you have quite a bit of stuff and are worried about having it close to you i.e. in tent for security reasons, something slightly bigger would be best

  • I have the zephros 2 lite, overall i like it, but be careful when insterting the poles in to there sleeves as i managed to tear one early into my tour

  • Thanks for the info guys.
The jupiter bivi looks nice and light but you're probably right about the tightness.
Laner, did the tear affect the waterproofness or was it just the outer pole sleeve that was ripped?

  • it was the sleeve bit that the end of the pole goes into to secure it. i just got some electrical tape and "fixed" it. (always bring tape!)

  • Gotcha, thanks Laner.
Thanks for the links Busseynova. It's an owners thread so they might be a bit biased but all reviews seem to think it's a good tent for good value. A few comments about the poor pegs but I can swap those out for £10.

  • I roll with TN Laser Comp 1 and am the happiest man alive. But yes, the pegs are shit.

  • Pegs?! Pins!

  • Titanium toothpicks!

  • Hilleberg Akto on Gumtree for cheaps. Not mine, just thought it might be of interest to someone here.

  • Ooh. Thanks for the headsup!

  • Eureka single tent / solitaire camp trails. It is heavier than 1kg but after my trip I can recommend this tent.

    • It survived a heavy rain storm
    • Just enough space for 190cm tall man
    • Keeps the bugs out well
  • The Tarptent Moment is very good. I sold mine a while back as I wasn't using it. But it weighs sub 1kg. 900g I think, and takes about 60 seconds to put up. Can handle strong winds and cold temps though. Just make sure you have a decent down sleeping bag. A decent amount of space and you can easily change and sit up inside it. The only thing it suffers from (being a single skin) is misting, so you get drops of moisture on you in the night.

The Gelert Solo at £25 is great value but tiny. Good for wild/stealth camping, but not so good if you need a bit of space. It's very cramped for getting changed inside. Made worse if it's raining. And not easy to cook from within.

  • Thanks for the help guys. Just bought a zephyros 2 lite online for £160. Not too bad.

I tried to buy that Hilleberg Akto linked by Babybat but the seller was a total scammer. Kept asking for my address to deliver and gumtree eventually sent an email informing me of the seller's suspicious activity elsewhere.

Can anyone recommend a good lightweight sleeping bag to accompany my new tent?

  • I have a Spacepacker Plus Mark II? (it's the larger, but still lightweight model using siliconized nylon for the fly) that I want to sell. If there's interest here I'll throw it into classifieds.
    Three caveats:

    • It is about 12 years old, and has a small (approx. 4mm) hole in the fly that I will repair. Otherwise in excellent shape.
    • I had it modified so that both doors on the inner tent are completely no-see-um mesh, I would have boiled in there otherwise!
    • I'm in Canada, so postage will be slightly more.
  • mountain equipment phantom for lightweight down bag.
