I'm ordering a paring knife blank (and maybe an oyster knife).
I have some cherry wood I'm going to use for the scales.
I'm thinking about using a coloured liner to give an accent colour in between the tang and scales. All the colours under the sun seem to be available.
What colour liners do you lot think would work with a cherry handle?
Currently thinking ;
A) very thin black 1mm or <1mm, just to frame the wood.
B) 2mm black contrast.
C) varying thickness of contrasting grey, red, black in a not uniform pattern - ie v, v. thin black, 2mm red, 3mm grey on one side, then all grey on the other framed either side with black.sorta like this, but obvs only one little section.
Originally I was thinking brass fixing bolts/pins. But this version has a steel handgaurd butt(?) thingy. So I'm less sure about brass and that lump of steel. A bit like:

Is there a go-to knife or are all knives at that price point more or less the same quality?
Oh man, I found a gorgeous knife for a reasonable price (95€).
Zakuri Bunka, the carrots in the bottom left were cut with the knife out of the box. I bet this knife gets beautiful patina over the years.
Handcrafted in Tosa, Japan and imported by a guy who has family over there and has a heart for traditional craftmanship.
Downfall: I missed the deadline for ordering this year by one day but still shot him a mail. Would be really cool if this works out. -

I visited Okamura from tosa-hocho.de yesterday as he lives about 35km from my parents place.
I originally wanted the Zakuri Bunkaboocho mentioned above but went for a Santoku and Funayuki instead. Both are slightly cheaper but still look very nice, thanks to the walnut grip and Japanese engravingAsymmetric grip for right handers

Has anyone sent a Swiss Army knife back to Victorinox for a service? Polish, sharpening etc.
I went into the flagship store in London as I heard they could do it there. The guy behind the counter wasn’t interested.

Do we have a thread for cuts yet?
I was sharpening a santoku on a combination India stone, was distracted and lost focus - Managed to stick a finger between the blade and the stone and slide right into the pad of my middle finger.
Not the worst knife injury, but finger pads like to bleed, it would seem, and superglue doesn't like loads of blood.

That sounds horrid, I usually cut a finer off a rubber glove and wrap some gauze round then jam it in the rubber finger nice and tight.

Did similar with a carving knife attempting to carve a gammon after the pub on Christmas Eve a few years ago... A&E nurses were withering about the injury

Pressure/binding and elevate above head can help to stop the bleeding for long enough for the glue to set. Otherwise butterfly stitches are always helpful if its really deep.

My dad had a New Years eve injury with a mandolin slicer, had to hunt for the tip of his thumb in the bowl of sliced potatoes... I did remind him that they include a hand guard for a reason...

I once slipped cutting a Baguette and stabbed myself in the thumb, bent the tip of the knife on the bone, nicked an artery and was spraying blood a foot in the air.
A&E stitched it up, then undid it and sent me to plastics because I damaged the nerve. On a different note, my wife's grandad had fingers of equal length after planing them off at work (was a carpenter)
Got a few hundred quid compensation and bought a new motorbike with the money. -

What kind of peeler? Surely those things are designed to be as safe as buggery?

You guys shouldn't be allowed near sharp objects...

The Y shaped ones, he was peeling a strip off an orange for an old fashioned and pulled to hard. I told him to use a knife but he wouldn't listen. He's a barman too so should absolutely know better. Oh well some people have to learn the hard way.

Was in Geneva last week. At the Victorinox store you can assemble your own knife (spartan iirc) and have custom engraved scales. For about 50euro :-0
