  • Looks like 15x100 front and 12x142 rear.

You can get these once they are back in stock: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=140135;menu=1000,4,123,30

There is also an aero version: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=140137;menu=1000,4,123,30

And a slight fancy lighter version: https://www.bike24.com/1.php?content=8;product=140125;menu=1000,4,123,30

Or build something with DT swiss 350 hubs:

@Turkish knows a source for Bitex hubs that are decent and cheaper than those DT.

All DT options above can be adapted to any standard and those wheels come with all adapters (plus tubeless strips and valves), not sure about Bitex.

If you haven't got the brakes sorted yet there is a pair of spyres with rotors on BR going for £40: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=40091&t=13073285

  • Hope also do decent hubs with changeable end caps so you can thru axles or QR. Depending on the rims, they might sneak over your £300 budget though @7ven

  • DCR Wheels are the plug for centrelock Bitex and are adaptable to any axle standard, just ask David what you need. Theyre lighter, cheaper and more POE than DT Swiss which is why I chose them

  • Also that link for spyres goes to a ritchey stem. I paid £84 for my spyres so I'm hoping it doesnt actually exist

  • Cheers everyone. Hadn't noticed that Hope are now doing the RS4. I'm a bit of a Hope fanboi with three of my roadbikes with Hope hubs. Might go for some sort of Hope RS4 / DT Swiss rim combo like on my Planet X. Thanks for taking the time to respond :)

  • Dt hubs are excellent though. Try the kinlin disc brake rims or the dt swiss r460 db rim. The kinlins are asymmetric which is a good thing. That combo is way better than the wheels that dt swiss put together themselves.

  • No but came with lots of extra bits. Didn't get them in the end sold for 220 on eBay 🙈

  • Looking at hunt all seasons disc wheelset.

Anyone have them here? Decent ?

It's that or dt Swiss 350 // the hydra

  • I have their race wide wheels and am throughly impressed. Really really like them

  • Thanks 🙏

  • I've got them but only ridden them 4 miles so far. It's was a great 4 miles though, felt great with some big compass rubber on there

  • What tyres are you using ?

  • Snoqualmie pass, tubeless

  • Hi all

Looking for some recommendations of what rims to build up some 36h Dura Ace 7600 hubs with. Ideally clincher for a change, but wouldn't rule out tubs. Kinlin were my first choice, but difficult to get hold of most of them in 36h and especially in silver (don't like the silver track/black semi-aero rim look for these hubs). Halo similar.

Looks like I'm left with Halo retro (look a bit cheap), Planet X retro (light, v cheap, prob shit), Kinlin ADHN (nice but a bit on the heavy side and described as 'touring' rims). I know Open Pros are a bit rubbish these days, but the CD anno finish looks nice and ain't too pricey. Bad idea?

Archetypes, tb14, etc nice but a bit too spendy.

Sheldon must be rolling in his grave with the end of 36h rims...

  • As you've mentioned the Planet X retro rim - any thoughts on this rim from anyone who has used it? Is it shit?
    Cheers!

  • The open pro is not too bad any more. Built a set of grey rim for an aussie customer and they were round very round. The grey looks good. I dont like them much because they are not a stiff rim but but a rear wheel with a geared hub with 36 spokes works well. fixed hubs give better bracing angles and lead to a stiffer wheel. so the Open Pro would work very well.

The OP is not wide though. That is why the archetype or the TB14 are better rims.

  • Building up a set of Pacenti TL28 Rim 29'er rims.

Any suggestions for disc hubs? Ideally not too pricey, but must be silver and 36 hole.

    Cheers.

  • Any suggestions for disc hubs?

Which axles? For QR, you should be able to find Shimano M525 in 36H/Silver

  • Which axles

Good question. Normal QR I think. But I'll check.

I was thinking about something a bit more bling, but it's pretty hard to argue with c.£30 for a pair of Deore hubs.

Does it make much difference whether I go for bolt on or center lock?

  • Does it make much difference whether I go for bolt on or center lock?

Not much. I prefer 6-bolt because it's simple and more widely used, so new rotors will always be cheaper and easier to buy. I haven't seen how centerlock holds up long term, but I'm concerned that a sliding fit spline will be prone to fretting which will destroy the expensive part (hub shell) just as fast as it destroys the disposable rotor.

  • 30 mile ride on the Hunts yesterday, felt really nice. Didn't notice much flex but it was a timid spin given the icy conditions.

  • Agree, not a fan of centre lock. Solving a problem that didn't exist.

I've got some boost spaced mountain bike wheels. The rear hub is an unbranded novotec I think. The centre lock spline interface is not 100% and so I get a little creak under braking. As boost is still new, any hub replacement is going to be ££££ even though I'm not fussed about swanky hubs.

Also, centre lock on alfine hubs can GTFO. I had three cassette lockring tools, non of which would work on an Alfine because of solid axel and nowhere for the pin on tool to go.

Zero problems with bolts for 15 years of mountain biking. Both my centre lock hubs have managed to annoy me almost instantly.

  • Been using centrlock for years. There are no issues that I have encountered.

the point about centrelock is rotors are easier to fit. shimano make specific lockring tools for them. The other point is heat transfer into the hub will be slightly better than with 6 bolt.

If you are braking alot on long decents Shimano ice tech or freeza rotors are the best at dissapating heat. Shimano XTR and now R9100 freeza rotors are centrelock only. For the riding I normally do 6 bolt solid steel rotors are fine so it depends like always what you are doing.

  • Other than having to get a different lockring for my dyno hub I've had no issues with CenterLock hubs and if Shimano are doing them they must be better. Simples.

  • Looking at zipp 202 disk with the new firecrest surface and hubs ? Whats the nearest equivalent with better hubs and carbon tubeless rim compatibility ?.
So far i can find the hunts and thats about it.
