can you get a set of cheap shimano road wheels in silver these days?
EDIT: found some r501-30s in silver from rose bikes for £75. I'm not going to do better than this am I?

• #3031
Yes - RS11's in silver for £95 from Ribble.

I've used SwissStop Yellow, Green and Black Prince, and Reynolds Cryo Blue - found that they all seated in a co-operative manner.
I've had first and second gen EE Brakes- which are you using, third?
Yep, third gen with both swissstop GXP II's and Ashima bright orange things. The swissstops played nicer than the ashimas but still weren't totally tool-less. The Ashimas were a *&^%.

Considering we've been considering cheap, aero wheels, what do people think of these results?
Seems quick and light, considering they're carbon/alu rims.

Snap. Been eyeing up the Gotthards all afternoon. Great price for the quality and build spec, but after a lot of umm-ing and ahh-ing I'm going to take the plunge with a hand-built wheelset.
Probably going for Alpha 400's with 20/24 Sapim Cx Rays (or Super), on American Classic Micro/205 Hubs or Novatech Superlight.
Should be a really strong, really light set. ~1350g ~£420. Pretty excited after tearing around on my 2100g r500's for the last 4 months.

You realised it won't be as stiff as your R500 right? they're more like climbing wheels at that weight.
edit - notice the 400 is heavier and beefier than the original 340, as you were gentlemen.
-
• #3036
20/24? You're not a small guy.
-
• #3037
Neither he is heavy, probably lighter than me.

I had a pair of 16/20 rs80's before the r500's and only had 2 broken spokes in about 2500 miles.
At 83kg, and set to be <80 by the middle of summer, I'm sure triple crossed cx rays on the rear and double crossed up front will be more than strong/stiff enough. The guy who's going to be building them will all the important questions anyway before anything's agreed, but seeing that the 400's are meant to be hard as nails, Im not really worried. He's also only a few hours away on the train, so any problems arise It'll be easy to sort out

• #3039
Okay probably not lighter than me.
-
• #3040
I weigh slightly less than you, Sam from LMNH said I shouldn't be riding on less than 28h for 2 cross cx rays on pacenti rims

My guess is the builder will say extra spokes and go for the lighter 340 rims if you want to save weight.

That's a lot of broken spokes.

That's a lot of broken spokes.
They had already seen who knows how many 1000 miles with Doubletap riding them too.
No idea how much but I think hes heavier than me.Anyway it'll be the 400s with 20/24 or 24/28, or Ill just get the Gotthards I guess. The 340 is rated up to a strict 75kg - it's not a strong rim at all. I highly doubt packing more spokes in would stop it from buckling
-
• #3044
24/28 would be better, it's already a light wide wheelset.
Did he know it's your only bike?
-
• #3045
Wont be my only bike for much longer ;-)
Already got everything but a frameset and chainset. Just need to decide on a nice frame.... -

Don't get another fucking 53/39 if you end up having a big cassette.

Don't listen to Scoble, big rings are good.

You plum. I've got my old 53/39 and an almost unused ultegra 12-27. I'm sure I can manage with that after using a 52/36 12-30 setup for the last 5 months
As you were gentleman ;-)

12-30! fucking MAMIL.

I was buying on a seriously tight budget back in Jan.
The cassette was £12 (cheapest I could find without going lower than tiagra) and the rest of the groupset came in just under £150. It's really done the job, got me through a difficult time getting my strength back but now Im strong enough and have enough money to start thinking of building up a really decent bike I wont be cutting the same corners.Going from using a £60 wheelset to a £4-500 one is going to make an enormous difference as it is - I cant imagine what having a full mid-high end bike's going to feel like
I just weighed a stack of 6000-2RS bearings out of my Novatec hubs, they are about 18g each. Even if you could find a replacement that weighed nothing, that's a pretty trivial saving. In fact, even full ceramic bearings are only about 30% lighter than steel ones.
