I'm long out of contract and overdue an upgrade from my badly flagging 4 and just been offered a 5 for free on my existing tariff. Seems a bit daft though when I could wait till friday and see what they want for the 5s...

Gonna run my 4s into he ground as I did with my original one before upgrading. Reckon it'll be good for another year, maybe two. My last iPhone survived being dipped in 3 pints, current one is still to get wet

Thanks Amey, that wasn't there when I looked initially
I'm intending to sell my 4s to pay for a chunk of the 5s..probably

Why not wait? remember the fuss when the 4 was released?
-

I am going to sell my 4S and get the next nexus and put this thread on ignore
-

I've not put a timeframe on it... I'm not doing it on day of release... always best to let the errors iron themselves out

Interesting that so many other posters are reporting recent iphone 4 perfomance just as the 5S is due to arrive.
Not normally one for the conspiracy theories but my 4 has behaved impeccably for two years and suddenly started misbehaving and hanging and hanging and hanging in the last month or so... which prompted me to check out what's available for my overdue upgrade. And oh look!
Hmmmm.

My 4 is the same and has been acting up for the past 2-3 months. The Facebook app in particular is an absolute chore to use now and so I never really log in to it any more..
Does restoring the phone help? Might give that a go this weekend.

I read 'planned obsolescence' as simply the discontinuation of support from the maker, rather than some built in sabotage shit
-
• #2538
Yes Ed, I know about obsolescece thanks. I'm well aware that Apple notoriously withdraws support and upgrades for superseded operating systems and software causing compatability issues and forcing upgrades.
That's whole different kettle of fish from what was being alluded to, which is actively negatively affecting the performance of an existing piece of hardware or software in order to make the new version more desirable.
The point being, withdrawing support and upgrades for an hitherto fully functioning set up should not cause it to immediately start performing poorly. Which is what annecdotal evidence appeared to be pointing to upthread.

exactly.
does look a bit sus doesn't it. iphone 4 users' poll?
-

Exactly the same thing happened with the old iPhone 3, it felt fine, and then after it's OS update - suddenly unbearably slow as the 4 is looming ahead.
Still, nobody forcing us to stick with it.
-
• #2541
No, but somebody is forcing you to not not stick with it.
oh whatever.
new phone time.

Not a conspiracy, it's how it work;
the russian programmer guy at my second to last job had a story about how back in mother russia his company had a big contract with some megacorp to make their primary bit of software and when they got to the release stage it was deemed the software was 'too performant' and the programmers were told to put in an artificial delay on every request.
whenever contract renewals came around they promised to increase performance of the software as part of the contract to get them to sign and would then just change the variable in the config to something slightly less and re-bill.

I just didn't upgrade! I stuck to 5.1 or something. Hangs with some of the newer apps and I can't even download some, but still works pretty well. If it ain't broke.....
