Err....so being on the drops makes you harder than me right?...good luck with that...:)
No, ride whatever bars you want, with your hands in any position you want. It doesn't make you a cretin.
However, whenever I see someone riding on tops (and I mean from lycra clad roadie to mountain bikers), I can't help but think "rank amateur". It's the equivalent of people who drive cars with their hands at 10 and 2.
Cretinous? no.
Don't know how to ride properly? yes. -

I recently cut my bars to 54cm (were 62cm actually) with a pipe cutter. I'd recommend to throw in 5 minutes and cut the bars to your shoulder width. For me it feels a lot better!
It's raining and snowing over here in Germany atm. So I think i try to get the rid of the freewheel on the other side of my hub, it's a bastard from hell and wouldn't come off :/

Why the hell do you think road bars have progressed to have the tops shaped to be more comfortable when riding on them?
Cretin! -

On drop bars, tops are the least aero and give the least amount of control. and standard road bikes don't have brakes there.
They are for climbing and occasionally so you can sit up on longer rides. But if you can't ride in hoods or drops for the majority of your riding, either your bike is set up wrong or you need to HTFU. As in the pic of the peleton in this thread, the pro's ride on hoods for 95% their 150km races.
For risers and flat bars it's still true, if you are riding with your hands next to the stem, you're doing it wrong.
There are notable exceptions, such as getting through traffic.
imvho of course.

Ha....doing it wrong? Whatever!

Cretin!Because people still use tops. They are also 0.00000001% more aero = faster.
remind me, which means you're gay, earing on the left or right? :P
cheers.

I dont useualy get involved with shit like this. But FFS!!!! What are you talking about? Doing it wrong? Why? People ride how feels best for them. Simple as. Go to the pets page. Look at some cute cats and have a think about what you are saying.

Remind me...which makes you more of a prick...that comment or your claim that riding on the tops is 'wrong' ?
Oh that's right...they both do! -

Sorry to have caused such distress!
I already said *"ride whatever bars you want, with your hands in any position you want."
*But when I see people on tops. I think they must be amateurs. I certainly wouldn't call them cretins or a prick for it.

I'd rather be an amateur when you consider:
expert = 'eX' is an unknown quantity, and a 'spert' is a drip under pressure.

when I see people on tops. I think they must be amateurs.
Then you think wrong...i ride tops and i raced cyclocross and mtb for years...along with 29yrs cycling experience.
My track bike has no hoods...my prefered position is centre top.
My road bike has hoods which is where i spend most time...although i still climb on the tops for long climbs...as do the majority of the best climbers in the beloved peloton. -

But to me, it still looks wrong.
Looks can be decieving I guess, like when I thought you might be gay because of your earing... it turns out, that there's a possibility that you aren't gay.

Amateur what? Amateur at looking good on a bike? Amateur at knowing their own favoured riding position?

you london guys should all break your own collar bones, getting into some narrow tuck.

Nice stereotyping there...do you have a problem with homosexuals too? or just the ones who ride on the top of the drops?
-
• #119
Surely homosexuals and those who ride on tops are one and the same?
-
• #120
I dont really know what being gay has to do with how one rides a bike. Please enlighten us?

Clearly they are to you. enjoy your day!
