I think that Jade Goody and her ilk performed a very important service for our society. Before the advent of reality TV as we now know it today, the tabloid press had far more time and space to devote to delivering their rather sickening brand of thinly veiled racism, homophobia and misogyny as well as purposefully reductive and ignorant representations of social and political processes.
Their arrival into "sleb" culture may have increased the amount of tawdry and risible gossip that is largely peddled at us with nothing short of frightening aggression, but it has meant a decline in what amounted to the acceptable face of bigotry.Don't get me wrong, I couldn't stand the woman and have no misgivings about her passing but it's wrong to think that this format of celebrity and the mechanisms that have created it have done no good.
That said, whilst I intend to remain respectful of the greiving, I would dearly love to punish the ridiculous and stupid society that either exploited or idolised here. To that ends I am seriously considering a petition to rename the region of East Anglia to East Angular in her memory.

Life is far too short to be channeling so much personal energy into the hatred of a person who chooses to live their life in a way that you don't personally agree with.
There's no 'chicken or egg' scenario here....reality tv came before those who gained notoriety on said shows.
People love to say how these people exploit the media and the gossip hungry public...but in most cases it's the 'stars' themselves being exploited and made to look like the fools most of them already were anyway...simply because that's where the tv companies and newspapers, and magazines get their money from.
The lure of fame to somebody who up until that point may have had a horrible life, brought up by horrible parents (or may not) is enough for them to throw everything they do or say into the public eye.
But in most cases these people are simply an annoyance to you when you turn on your tv, or flick through your sunday paper...but to put so much of your own energy into hating them is pointless.
They're fully aware of what they're doing...and what most people think of them.
But if they're happy to sell themselves in this way...it's their call...should they care that their actions anger you so much?
As i said, life is too short...in this case, in the eyes of her children, about 50yrs too short."...And these children
that you spit on
as they try to change their worlds
are immune to your consultations.
They're quite aware
of what they're going through..."

This thread's certainly got a lot more interesting while I've been sleeping...
I can't help but feel the people who have said we should feel bad for her children and family are missing the point. Apart from a few who are openly celebrating the fact, I'd wager that the majority implicitly feel bad for her, as they would for anyone who's suffered a loss, but that it's impossible to feel 'specific' sympathy whenever something bad has happened in the world.
I vaguely resent the fact I seem to be being 'told' that I should feel particularly sad, or more sad, about a vacuous, air-headed nobody, just because they happened to be in the public eye for being a vacuous, air-headed nobody.
As such, I think it's perfectly reasonable to comment on what she did with her life - just because she's dead doesn't make her a saint.

Smeg! You blends!
Close? -

I don't think anybody should feel sad for either her or her children unless you actually DO feel sad for them....but i also think it's pointless to get so angry and have so much hatred for somebody you probably never knew or never met, but who chooses to live in the public eye.

It's not the person - it's the way it reflects on our culture and the society in which we live. That's where the 'anger' comes from.

The use of the word 'her' and the fact that you're use of the word 'her' is in referrance to Jade Goody leads me to believe that in this particular case it's about the person...and not the reflection on our culture and society.
And also....just because she chose to milk her 15 minutes for all it was worth to try and earn more money doesn't make her that much of a sinner either...there are far more people on this planet deserving of hatred than a minor celeb like 'her'.

Jade Goody was a racist.
I didn't see any racism from Goody, do you have any examples of her racism ?

The fridge and the blender were pretty obscure, Henry.
But that SINK is incredibly tacky. A fitting end to this thread.

Thank the Lord (metaphorically speaking though, I don't want to start a debate) I lived long enough to own my red SMEG.....and to see my children almost grown-up.....and that one of my bikes is fixed gear.
If only each of us lived as if today were our last day eh? It'd be utter chaos.

it's possible to not feel any emotion about the woman personally (i never knew her, and pretty much ignored her 'work'), completely disagree with the cheap celebrity culture she embodied, and yet still find the hatred and rejoicing at her death to be incredibly distasteful.
i know it's possible because that's how i feel.

The thing is, Jade was never built up by the media as someone to look up to. From the outset (East Angular etc) she was a figure of fun for the tabloids. After the Shilpa Shetty comments she was mostly vilified from what I recall. In between she did some shit on far-away satellite stations that no-one watched.
It is only since the 'tragic' final part of her life that she has become ubiquitous and been given the queen of hearts treatment.
If she had more intelligence & self-esteem she may not have felt the need to vindicate herself by her appearances in the tabs etc in such a fashion. See John Diamond for a dignified death in the media spotlight.
Oh - and I love a bit of celebrity tittle-tattle, reality TV nonsense personally.

John Diamond middle class success dies in in the media = dignified.
Jade Goody working class loud mouth dies in the media = undignified.I just don't get all this hostility to this undeserved figure of hate ?
"If she had more intelligence".
She had a mother was a serious drug addict which saw Jade staying at home and looking after her from the age of five doing the cooking and ironing and cleaning, keeping the police at bay as they raided the house, hiding stolen goods and cheque books - making excuses to cover her mother's back - her reward was (as is usual in these kinds of relationships) the occasional black eye, and general abuse.
Her dad also treated her like shit, regularly shooting up on heroin then shitting and pissing himself in her bedroom when she was a little girl, hiding a fucking gun in her room for god's sake, being dragged out of the house by the police, in and out of prison, usual crap carry on of a criminal addict - eventually fucked himself and overdosed on heroin and died in the toilets of a Kentucky Fried Chicken.
The girl was 19 when she applied for big brother, it was partly a chance to escape her mum's newly acquired move into crack addiction - I think that is a pretty good move for someone who is still a teenager and from that background, it's just a pity she made a success out of her limited chances as it seems to have pissed off a lot of middle class people with a good education and upbringing - who have turned her into a hate figure.

It said so in the Express and that's good enough for me.;)

Well,
It all depends on the definition of racism really.
If it includes saying things with a negative racial context and then justifying them not by racism but intellectual shortcomings then potentially yes. Also if it includes allowing racist activity to continue in her presence then also yes.
However, the vague challenge laid down by Tynan is open to easy reparsing and an obvious defence.
ask anyone who's met me from the forum i am a very nice chap i am not the cunt i make myself out to be above but i won't apologise for my comments
i just hate the way these reality tv people become the pinnacle to which (most ) tabloid readers aspire,
it is that which i hate, not goody in particular, but as she hired max clifford ( another hateful figure ) and put herself firmly in the public view i feel it is my right to say what i feel about her
and both of them can rot in hell as far as i am concerned
i just wish they would pay as much attention to the politicians who are cheating the people by claiming expenses in a deliberately dodgy way, who cheat lie
put them on the front pages expose their cheating and misappropriating instead of a racist bigot ( jade goody not you )
