Knee Pain

  • My experience with GP referrals to physio was smooth and easy, sorry you've not had the same luck.

You could try walk-in to get a referral. Who knows how long you'll wait for the NHS physio though.

  • it's pretty frustrating ... every single time I needed something healthcare in this country it's been a major fuckup, with the exception of homerton hospital minor injuries who glued my head together proficiently. But yeah, all my GP can say is "paracetamol" and "come back in 4 weeks" or something like that. Shocking!

  • Right ... went to Guys and St Thomas minor injuries unit. They were actually very good.

Got xrayed straight away as they suspected stress fracture of the tibia. Nothing showed. So they say for now they suspect MCL inflammation. However, they said fractures often don't show, and if not better in two weeks or so they'd re-xray and see whether a started healing process of a fracture would show.

In the meantime, physio, ibuprofen, light non-weightbearing exercises.

bluerip00, pm to you on the way.

  • Hi guys, thanks for the numerous recommendations on this and other threads - an inbox full of PMs to welcome me back from studying the sympathetic nervous system and rib cage biomechanics for the last few days.

Replies have now been sent this evening. For reference: I work in Kentish Town, North London.

Look forward to meeting and hopefully helping some of you in the near future.

    Michael.

  • I finally got myself to a physio last night after on and off knee pain since january.

He did a lot of poking about and seemed to think it stemmed from my quads being too tight.
After sticking a bunch of needles in my muscles he showed me a few stretches to do which should help, I'm aching right now but My muscles don't feel as tight in my quads, will just have to wait and see if it helps I suppose (I've never stretched before/after a ride before)

  • Sooo...after a couple of bad hill starts coupled with badly fitting cleats, I've started to get pain under my right knee cap.

One of my buddies has offered me his bianchi nirone 7 campag-veloce with more scratches and scrapes than most peoples beaters for the princely sum of £300!

The paintwork is in truely horrible condition with some of the scratches going to the paint, but it still rides well and has carbon forks, seat post and stem.

Should I go for it in order to give me knees a break? I've just done some vote counting at the elections, and will hopefully gettin paid around £300 so I thought this might be a good buy.

    What would your thought be?

    Thanks

  • imho - yes - why wouldn't you?!

I ride SS for just that reason, but then I'm old.

The thread will now fill with people telling you to go get measured properly and htfu.

  • I think more importantly, if the knee hurts often/all the time get your doctor to send you to an orthopaedic specialist. If it's just a strained ligament going easy on it will be fine, but if there's something else like a torn cartilage it will need treatment.

  • To be fair Mr Conker is actually more right than I am - but then most people usually are.

  • You should rest and while doing so, read the rest of this thread and learn the location of the search button.

  • Just push through it. Up your gearing by at least 20", make sure your pedalstroke is erratic and 'snatchy', never let your cadence get above 70rpm, and drop your saddle by 6".

If you follow this advice, and make sure you keep your knees exposed during the winter, it'll clear up quickly, and stay healthy.

  • bmmf

repped for the brilliant advice, i can imagine this going down in fixie skidder folklore as how to fix problem knees

  • that's bullshit. raise your saddle so you have to dip the front of your foot on your piston like downstroke, and maybe think about riding in espadrilles or other suitably flexible footwear.
try to skid stop at all times and lay off the front brake.

  • try to skid stop at all times and take off the front brake.

    fixed.

  • its like bmmf proposes cold therapy, mrsmyth suggests hot therapy

probably best to move your saddle back and forth, up and down, for every ride

  • get a profesional fitting done....

Don't forget daily cod liver oil supplements.

Turn it backwards now and again so you look completely different too.

  • Awesome advise!

What were your thoughts on the Bianchi? Is a scratched up 2008 bike worth £300?

dunno much about pricing on roadbikes but I think you can do a lot worse with 300 if it's in good mechanical condition

  • 300 sounds alright. Haggle down to 250 anyway though.

  • He was making out that £300 was a bargain - paid over £1k for it originally but I wasn't sure due to all the damage. There is nothing comparable on eBay or gumtree to compare it to so I thought I'd ask the experts

I'll try to haggle and let u know how it goes!

Old school advice here: Will either end in success or failure like most interventions. The body is great at adapting to extreme loading, just give it time.

  • my knee hurts

  • my knee hurts

raise your saddle, drop your handlebars and put on odd length cranks

you read this on the interwebz, it will fix your problem
