FFS... I've been slightly adjusting cleats, saddle height and position in tiny increments for months now trying so eliminate this left knee pain! Hippy posted a really useful link to a document that helps you analyse the pain to sort it out.
http://www.cptips.com/knee.htmStill getting that twinge though. I guess rest is the only cure... but I want to ride to Brighton tomorrow!
A geared bike looks more and more like the next purchase...

go ss for a bit at least?
or book in bike whisperer or Michael for a fit?

Sounds like the problem's with your body, not your bikefit. Somewhere along the (non-bike) chain, you're out of whack.

just did some googling on it-band stretches, found this one that i hadn't seen before
My IT Band Stretch - YouTube
just gave it a quick try, really feels like you're stretching the whole outside of the leg, feels a lot more efficient than other stretches i've tried

I think I've screwed myself slightly
I've been off the bike for a couple of months after going on a massive ride and ending up with pain in my left knee, got back on last week and just did my commute once and I think I've over extended my left knee again, as it's now really sore down the back on the inside
Going to try and get it seen to ASAP, but anyone know of anything I can do in the short term, I'm staying off the bike for now

Pain directly behind the knee (i.e. the bendy bit), on one leg?
Snap- I find that hamstring stretches make it ease-off, and [birnie]smashing it[/birnie] brings it on

^ agree. stretching hamstrings, thighs, calfs, lower back, ie literally the whole lower body, helps my knees a lot

I think the problem has been caused by me being a bit forgetful.
When I rode across germany I moved my saddle up a couple of times because I got a bit of discomfort at the front of my knee, so I think over the course of the trip I got nicely stretched out as I was riding everyday, so then when I got back on last week, after not riding for a while my legs didn't like it because the saddle was still at the higher position
I think if i'd moved it down I would have been ok, its just annoying because I really miss riding my bike everyday AND it now hurts walking too

Honestly, try some hamstring stretches, they helped me no end- I was hobbling before I did them.
The leg still hurts, but I can live with it now.

5 sun salutations every morning, such a good way to start a day

I also find running helps for my cycling.
I cannot emphasised how much of a difference that make, 2 weeks worth of 3.5km running enable me to comfortably do centuries ride without a problem.

I'd like to try running, I was probably the fittest I've ever been after the big ride and I feel like it then went to waste when I wasn't able to get on the bike right after
but I'm worried that the impact of running would do more damage than good, even though its working a different set of muscles and not putting the same strain through the joint

I dislocated my knee on Saturday. No ligaments broken, so I should be back riding in a couple of weeks. Any exercises I can do when I heal to strengthen the muscles around the knee joint?

Different exercises;
One legged squats, reach and touch your toes or as far as you can, stretch your quads.

Hello!
I have had a good read of this thread and other bits on the net, but I hope you guys can shed some light on my knee pain.
I can ride my ss for 70 mile plus with no issues whatsoever and consider myself to be in OK shape. I am not new to cycling and regulalry ride long distances without any issue..... on my single speed road bike (stock Langster).
However, after a mere 20 miles on my MTB I get knee pain on the inside of my right knee. When I say inside, i mean on the left side of my right knee, but it is external to my knee, not internal. Just to the left and slightly above the knee cap.
It only hurts when I pedal and only feels a bit stiff when I walk. The pain occurs even in a high gear and pedal at high cadence so I do not feel it is strain related, but I am not an expert.
It started when I cycled to brighton from london on my MTB the week after Mountain Mayhem (MM) (long off-road cycle race) about 3 years ago.
Two things happened at MM and I think one may be the cause of this knee pain.
1 - I changed the SPD pedals on my MTB bike. Same brand and model as before and as those on my SS, but for some reason they seem to have a lot less float.
2 - I crashed at Mountain Mayhem many times (it was very muddy) and one of the crashes twisted my knee quite badly.
I was absolutley fine before MM and the only thing that changed on my bike is the pedals and the suspension forks.
I have just bought some new pedals so hope it will do the trick, but my questions is has anyone else had anything like this i.e. pain on one bike but fine on another?
Thanks!

did you change your shoes? the pedals need to have a bit of float but the shoes are more important. make sure the cleat is attached at the same angle that your foot naturally hangs at if you were to dangle your legs off a table.
but it actually sounds a lot like you could benefit from a shim in the right shoe to angle your foot. a lot of knee pain caused by cleats is down to stretching ligaments as the lower leg rotates through the pedal. the cleat prevents the foot from rotating, causing small unnatural stretching through the knee. you only feel it after a couple of hours riding, by which time the damage is done. i find specialised soles are great and come with a pack of shims - orange to raise the inside of the foot, yellow for the outside for weirdos like my left leg, which rotates inwards on the downstroke. i have mavic shoes and the original soles were rubbish, nearly ruined me.
otherwise, it's probably that you damaged ligaments in the crash. best to see a doctor or physio.

Thanks Bernard.
About a year ago I got some new Sidi Dominators as my old Specialized shoes had worn out. I had the MTB style cleats fitted by a bike fitter recommended on here (bike whisperer in Acton area??) as I suspected it may be a cleat issue.
The guy said the sidis were different to the specialized so I may need wedges, but as I had no problems with my SS bike I assumed all was fine.
I had the knee problem before and after my new shoes. I wear the same shoes on my MTB and SS.
I guess I will go and see a physio.
Thanks for your help!
