soperRiva, you could try going to see Graham Anderson at Balance physio in Clapham.
He's the physio who works at CycleFit on Wednesday.
He's good and has a set of rollers at his practice (although you may want to check whether it can accommodate bikes with axle nuts as sometimes that's an issue...)

Stabbing pain sound like you should give it a bit of a rest until you get it sorted instead of riding any more before that ...

soperRiva - I can fit you in to my Cycle Clinic on Thursday afternoon

I went to the physio today and she told me that I have wear and tear on the kneecap. Riding will make it worse, and I should back off. I don't want to.
So what so I do? Ride and end up hobbling around at 50, or stop riding and get fat and go bonkers?

This is why I am avoiding
a) telling the wife my knees hurt, on the inside when walking up stairs and cycling out of the saddle
b) going to the doctoras both will tell me not to cycle so much, and as all my cycling is commuting that would mean going on the tube.
So fuck that.
Head in the sand time.
Got a 3 week break coming up soon, so hopefully that will clear it up.

the doc told me the health benefits/downsides of me continuing with my cycling, would be better for me than if i stopped and became(?) a fat cunt. fat cunts get sore knees too.
i had the op and things are much better, but there is still the odd day when it hurts.
(i had other knee issues that were discovered - and fixed - when the opened me up, though.)

I've had a cycle fit. It did help, but it won't stop my knees getting crumblier. I'm counting on bionic knees in the future.

Don't be so pessimistic. You may have 'wear and tear' (very non-specific) but there may be a number of contributing biomechanical factors, many of which may be correctable and could promote many years of happy / happier cycling.

She said everything else was fine; well-defined quads for stability, all that. The only bad bit is that the back of my kneepad is getting scratched and scored, and that will get worse with time.

Sir Sparks,
Could you just lay off riding fixed gear for a while? I found that when I knee is really hurting riding my geared bike helps.
Also try using normal shoes and clips/straps for a while, that might make a difference.

My lateral collateral ligament in my right knee is completely shredded, repeatedly torn and retorn playing rugby, never had the operation to have it reattached either. When I went to see my GP about a year ago to ask him if I should have the operation as I was doing a lot of cycling he said not to bother as the cycling will build up the muscles surrounding it basically rendering it useless.
Strange thing is I actually find it more comfortable to ride fixed than geared as when I'm freewheeling I find it more likely to jar my knee when my leg is extended but if I am constantly pedalling it feels fine! Peculiar one but doesn't bother me much anymore other than when it's cold.

my knees are fucked ... didn't you witness me suffering bad on DD (even though that was strange shin pain and cramps rather than knees)?
Spinning low gears, not overdoing it, but to a good portion just ignoring it are my strategies.
Also I switched to frogs from SPDs due to DD problems, and so far I think they're helping. -

Good read sparky, there's some helpful tips in the comments too.
