Do the roller thing before you leave, that's what physio told me. To have stretched and relaxed muscles as you start riding will help your knees to track straight. Just make sure you warm up a bit first

Hi guys, I'm a colleague of Dave's, kboys physio. If you have any cycle-specific queries or want some professional advice feel free to PM me or post on my thread

Happy rollering!

very slow commute in today, 6 miles, and knee hurts. Or not hurts, but I can feel it will if I cycle much longer. Fucking shit knee.
feels like there's a sideways hinge in the knee and it's too tight or something.
bollocks this. more rest, more rolling, more stretching. and no dynamo it seems, not to keen to embark into the night and having to turn around with a screwed knee. well disappointed

bolivian marching powder = pain goes away and you ride faster ;)
-
• #331
ha. i've had that though too
-
• #332
I'll give it another go on Friday and Saturday. I'm probably do a gentle 20-25miles tomorrow and see if any of this pays off for my right knee when I go for a long ride on Sunday.
Ride done - No pain. Fuck yeah! That piece of foam is amazing.

knee envy
seriously, i get envious of everyone i see on a bike, with their working knees and all

My physio just diagnosed me with a case of quadriceps tendonitis :(
She said rest will fix it but we all know thats not going to happen. She knew that and gave me some exercises that can be put to use for most knee ailments.
Just do around 10 squats with your back against a wall around 3 times a day. If your knees dont ache afterwards its not being done properly. You gotta feel the burn! -
• #335
do not do those squats above if you are receiving treatment for knee issues, they could make it worse or interfere with your recovery.
(i was told not to do squats as it wasn't a strength issue just that they weren't firing)
there is plenty of good advice on this thread but the best is "see a physio" -

So Kboy
You think you're up to riding to Dunwich?
-
• #337
nope, sucks balls, but haven't got a single long ride in the last month cause of my knee so due to lack of preparation and the risk that my knee could blow in the middle of the night somewhere in essex I'm out
Going for a two week holiday though the weekend after, that should be enough rest for the knee so once I'm back I'm determined to do it later this autumn
Anyone up for it daytime in say sept / oct? Sooner the better I think to get as much sun as possible
-
• #338
kboy, I feel your disappointment. I had to bail last year due to the back injury, and I was gutted.
Anyway, maybe aim for something a bit later in the year, like and audax or a sportive? -
• #339
Yeah it sucks, been wanting to do it since i heard about it, finally had the fitness to do it and now my knee goes, no fun at all
never done an audax or sportive, or anything organised on my bike for that matter. My plan is to pack fuckloads of samosas and water and set off an early saturday morning and aim for Dunwich
-
• #340
Shame about that Kboy
I'm sure you'll get some company for the ride if you let people know when you're up for it and fit.
I'll join you if I'm free as I've never ridden to dunwich in daylight
-
• #341
cool, sounds good! gonna give my knee til i'm back from holiday, then go for rides to check it's back in action, and as soon as I can put some trust in it i'll post about it
-
• #342
Kboy there's always next year!
There is no point in jeopardising your long term knee health over a rushed "perceived" recovery just do ride dunwich. I'd make getting your knee better number one priority.

Another question for the knee knowledgeable: I really miss my morning commute, do you think it's bad to do an easy 6 miles each morning? The knee don't hurt though I can feel it's not 100% ok
Or should I keep resting it?
-
• #344
Keep resting it. It sucks balls not getting out but in the long term the benefits of resting it now are superior.
What has your physio advised?
-
• #345
He said it'd be fine to ride, but stick to the milage I already do and not increase it. Tried that though, and it started to hurt again after 25 miles
Going to the bike whisperer tomorrow to set my cleats up, that'll be 20ish miles so will be interesting to see how the knee feels after that. He'll hopefully take another look at my posture on the bike as well to check all is ok, so that combined with properly set up cleats might perhaps do wonders
and i've taken the gearing down from 76gi to 66gi on my fixed, that'll hopefully help as well

Does anyone else get this knee pain when you cycle, around the tendon below the knee cap?
-
• #349
quite a few people have complained of knee pain and have posted about it http://www.lfgss.com/search.php?searchid=2389244

No. But I had a scottish friend who did. He seemed to also have Knee gain, whatever that is...
lol?
My roller came today and I gave it a good 20-25 minutes on my IT Bands, Glutes, Hamstrings, Quads, Calves and my upper back (I wasn't too keen on hearing my spine crunch)... I'm liking the pain though.
I'll give it another go on Friday and Saturday. I'm probably do a gentle 20-25miles tomorrow and see if any of this pays off for my right knee when I go for a long ride on Sunday.
