My first surgery was in March 2014, second surgery (other knee) in September 2014. Both inner meniscus. They removed about 15% on the inner on both knees. I can ride brakeless with extremely low gearing but skidding isn't an option. My knees still hurt so racing isn't an option either. I'm slowly getting back in the saddle for training and I'll probably keep on doing just that. No more alleycats, criterium racing or other difficult on the knee stuff. Crouching is painful, sitting cross-legged is a no-go and even running to the subway isn't something my knees like. But my physician said I walk a bit weird so I really need to make sure I never run because I apply pressure on my knees in a bad way (I hope I explain this right). Riding with a front brake is still ok, I can apply enough back pressure, just can't skid (that pulls on one knee and that's bad in my case). I hope that I will soon be able to grab the road bike again for some training rides, until then I stick to what I understand, and that's a low geared fixie with a front brake. But I know a lot of people who had the same surgery who run marathons.
Well ok I'll do some alleycats but the small ones. Just not the big ones with corporate sponsors and hundreds of people and teams that are competing.

Anyone here have any experience with impact bursitis of the knee? I got knocked of my bike and went down hard on my left knee, which swelled to the size of a pineapple. Now, over a week later the swelling has mostly reduced but it feels "loose and crunchy".
I can't imagine getting back on my bike any time soon and this seasons goals are out the window but I would really love to be riding (and working) again. Anyone had something similar, got a estimate of how long I'm likely to laid up for?

I have had meniscectomies in both knees and now have osteoarthritis. I still ride fixed (48/19) but use a brake. All my geared bikes use compact chain sets as my knees really don't need or like to grind at 60rpm. Ride sensible low gears, keep your knees warm and you should be ok.
Riding around on track ratios pulling whipskidz brklz is a mugs game if your body is worn out.

Rest ice compression elevation and NSAIDs.
Don't antagonise it whilst swollen.

ohhh that sounds bad man. take care of your knees, you need them. Mine keep hurting when cleaning my house, doing mechanics, standing too long, walking a distance, cycling. So annoying... I avoid walking with compression on them because it weakens them. I do make sure they are warm and do easy spinning to train my legs and do exercises at the physiotherapy gym.
I don't mind track ratio's as long as it's on an actual track. Going to do a training run when the drome reopens at the end of the year. And yeah, keeping it warm is essential.

Not the most positive feedback stories but I appreciate their honesty. I'll see how they do over the next few months but seriously thinking now more so to get a motorcycle that can at least stream through traffic cause the bus/tube is demoralising. I don't know how I did it before.

So its fixed and brakeless or motorcycle?! Doesn't make much sense to me. Try riding with a brake, try two brakes, try a freewheel.

Why would compressions weaken the knee?
After fairly ineffectual physio I had the biggest improvements from wearing a knee brace at night.

Yes at night, to reduce swelling after surgery or other stuff that damages the knee. But actually walking with them relieves some pain but it will weaken the muscles around the knee that actually keep everything in place. That results in more issues (in my case). I've used compression at night as well, during the first months after surgery. Before surgery I used them for just walking and going to work. Keep in mind I wasn't even able to climb stairs before surgery and my apartment doesn't have an elevator.
Two years ago I weighed around 174 pounds with almost visible abs, two months ago I weighed 238 pounds, I now weigh 211 pounds. My goal is 165 pounds. Slow metabolism, bad food and two knee surgery's can do that to a person.

Fuck me going the private route is expensive. £250 for a 10 minute consultation and now been referred to former West Ham head physio who's currently also treating Richard Branson. I'm losing my money very quickly.

I posted ages ago about pain the front of my knees.
I tried changing from clipless to flats etc and didn't get an improvement but then realised the riding position (knees out) on the derny at work may have been putting strain on my knees so took a break from riding it at all and then when I had to ride it again just rode knees in and that problem solved itself.
Now though I have been getting out and doing more miles recently and I've been feeling a slight tightness in the back of my (right) knee.
Likely cuplrit?
Found a bikeradar thread that said knee pain at the back = saddle too high but it's definitely not that.
Couldn't really describe it as pain, perhaps more, discomfort? But I reckon I should try sort out whatever is causing it incase it progresses.

Have you been ramping up the miles? Any tightness in the hamstring?
It may just be some inflammation from overdoing it a bit, ice after might help but if nothing else I'd say make sure to stretch your legs and foam roll. If your hamstring feel a bit tight too it might be worth trying to strengthen it.

No tightness in hamstring but mileage has definitely been ramped up.
Not been doing 'serious' miles for a while, just commuting and short mountainbike blasts mostly but getting back into riding my fixed more and did a 35mile fixed ride last week and 75miles on heavy steel Surly mtb this week.
Don't remember feeling it during 35mile fixed ride but maybe on the commute the day after, came on pretty early into the 75miler.
Should I foam roller after a decent ride even if I'm not feeling too bad then and there?

Anyone know any good effective IT band stretches? I can strengthen my VMO to balance out the over tight ITB as I have ITB friction syndrome, but it's hard to loosen the IT band.

Be careful
I was getting pain in the back of my leg and assumed it was hamstring tightness. I carried on stretching my hamstrings. Instead it was degenerative disc disease in my spine, impinging on the sciatic nerve. It has left me in considerable discomfort for most of this year. Have had to do a lot of Physio and reduce activity as a result.
Next weekend I am having epidural injection into my spine under x ray to try and reduce the nerve swelling so I can then do more rigorous Physio and rehab on my back.
I am not saying this is what your problem is, but just be wary of Internet diagnosis. The pain I was getting felt like tightness in the back of my leg so stretching it further felt like the right thing to do, with hindsight it was quite incorrect.

Foam roller for IT band, or if you enjoy pain buy the Trigger Point therapy rollers.

Foam rolling religiously atm. It does help but I find stretching helps more. Will probably progress to the spiky ones soon.

As @dancing james said maybe is any other problem, but if its tension just strech and roll once a day whenever possible until its fine. Won't do any harm anyways

Though would it not be sensible to ride freewheel on a lower ratio to build that strength up?
