Anyone mentioned Annie Londonderry yet or the Suffragette movement?
not yet. the link reminded me of something. I've always thought of the unique relationship between the feminist movement and bikes - when the old penny farthing style bikes became obsolete and replaced with a bike that they could actually ride (in a skirt), late C19th women had the opportunity for mobility, freedom and independence in a way that had not happened before. I always wondered whether this was influential to the suffragette movement...

Here's a good one: http://www.nls.uk/scotlandspages/timeline/1914.html
dunno about other Suffragettes, but Olive Wharry, who burnt down the Kew Refreshment Pavilion in 1911 (I think), like to cruise around the country on a motorbike.

Aboriginal Women on the Move who cycled across Canada, none of them having done any serious cycling before hand.
Great people, really friendly. Cooked some lovely food for me and the gf when we were cycling across Canada as well and carried our bags for a day.

my mum's aunt (not sure what she is to me so to speak), riding accross canada at age 70, having heart trouble, having to be flown home to get a pacemaker fitted, cos her insurance wouldn't pay for it to be done there, then once recovered flying back out to join her friend to finish it off.c
ok she didn't do it all, but did most of it after having a heart trouble, and a pacemaker fitted. that's 531 double butted.

Surprised no one has mentioned Ines Brunn...aaamaaaazing...
Fabiana Luperini won 4 tours of Italy and 3 tours of France back to back. It's a record that still stands today, but Luperini went on to win another tour of Italy in 2008. It's been 13 years since here first Giro win in 1995. Only Gino Bartali has won two grand tours that span 10 years apart or greater. Also she has won many of the classics and is considered to be possibly the greatest climber in history. She won the Giro Del Trentino 5 times and Fleche Wallonne three times, and those records also remain unbroken. She won Tour De Aude in 1998, won the nationals in 1996 and 2004, which was perhaps her most spectacular victory where she broke away from the pack, and stayed away the entire race with a solo win in front of her hometown crowd.
