Herne Hill Saturday Training

  • I'm going to go back to Intermediates this Saturday, I think. Basic was certainly pleasurable but a little too mild - not sure if I even really broke a sweat. I'll just have to suffer through the two hours and hope for a improvement in fitness over the coming weeks!

  • You can leave whenever you want. If you've wrung yourself out after the first hour, just knock it on the head and keep coming back until you can do the full 2 hours..

  • it's not really 2 hours, it's more like 1h40 with a 15 minute rest in the middle

Were you on the Arthur Scargill frame? I think we were partnered up for a little while at the start

The very light one... might have been partnered with me as well, on a Blue Maxi Sports with little 'stars' on it.

2 weeks left of basics then I think I'll be ready for inters. Safety wise anyway, not sure about the fitness... Basics was a bit slow on Saturday and it was getting frustrating towards the end.

Oh, that is much more manageable then. Will tick the box this weekend in that case

  • The overall duration isn't a very relevant question in my opinion. More relevant would be whether you can ride repeated efforts for 1-2 laps at circa 45 - 50 km/h, and 10-15 laps at circa 40-45 km/h.

  • I think Monday nights will be running as normal next week - 22nd

Ah, cock and balls, I was looking forward to this tonight. Better to find out now than when I arrive though.

  • As far as I'm aware, all sessions are cancelled midweek due to the continuation of the delayed building works. But all tarmacking will be finished in time for the Saturday session

  • Yeah I saw that on the website. Bad news but I'm glad you posted it and saved me the hassle!

  • I'm wondering whether I can make the jump to intermediates.
I completed 5 basics at the end of last season and was fairly comfortable by the last couple, but I've not been down to the track since, despite going to a few Wed turbo sessions over winter.

    Will I be hopelessly outclassed?

Ideally I'd do a few more basics first but due to other sports commitments, I've only got 1/3 Saturday mornings free until September anyway.

  • Why not do one more basic session this year and see how you go? Intermediates is a big step up.

  • That's what people keep telling me :)
The issue is, from now until September, I'm either away on weekends, or I've got to be around Clapham Common at 1pm on Saturdays.

But yeah, you're right, 1 more basic would definitely let me know where my fitness stands.

  • PQR and dglshrn, You are indeed both correct.
    This is the bike - the frame turns 20 y/o this year;

Dglshrn, great build! Loved that paint job.
Hopefully see you both again soon.

Didn't realise it was a 56cm. So fucking light, man. Jeez...
Got my veloflexes on this week though, to shave off a few extra grammes ("not becoming a weight weenie, not becoming a weight weenie").

  • Yeah very quick, someone said there were a few Cat A riders in there today
The coaches were funny shouting 'no racing' and 'go on!!!!' at the same time

The coaches could see that racing tactics were being deployed to stay near the front as the training session was coming to an end. With three laps to go the working line stalled and riders were three abreast coming out of the home banking. (yes the wind was a factor) In the later stages of the training ride if riders are at the front they should give it their best shot to either maintain the pace or pull the speed up a little. Jumping away or slowing up so somebody else picks up the pace are race tactics. These are dealt with on Monday night. Slowing up can be very dangerous in the later stages of a training ride as some riders drop their heads and focus on the wheel in front. In training, if on count back you realize you are going to be at the front for one of the last five half lap changes so be it – make it a fair one.
In racing terms, slowing the race up or soft pedalling on some tracks used to get you banned from the rest of the meeting for not defending your position!
For information 43 riders were still in the string with 5 laps to go. 27 riders were in the string for the last lap.

  • @brooksie How did you get that info about the riders?
Looking forward to attending race training next Monday night, my first ever race training

Thank god those kind of prejudices have died out with the judges who came up with them.

  • Soft pedalling would be defending your position at times anyway e.g. wanting to remain 3rd or 4th wheel, and not wanting to get spat out the front. Wouldn't it?

  • Employing race tactics at intermediate training is well LOL.

How many points do you get for winning one of those 'races'?

  • Is anyone on here doing the induction this Saturday?

  • V possibly.

  • Need smaller cog first doe

  • ^ jake, I've got a spare 14tooth Dura Ace

I was doing the second to last turn on the front of the bell lap and we came out three abreast at turn 4 during the third lap out because there was a very small and tired rider up front that refused to swing off.

To contest the sprint finish of a two hour session just like you would a club ride returning to the city is given in any situation!
