Faaarkin 'ell. Saw this thread after the first few posts, laughed loudly then went and sat in a meeting for two hours. There is a vicious circle of different opinions here, but I for one applaud your actions mikec. Some pointlessly sanctimonious posts up there ^^

haha yesterday i had a bus driver try and run me into the pavement while i was in the designated cycle area. i had to jump off the bike so i didn't get squished. i thn went round to his window banged on it threw a torrent of abuse at him pulled his window open shouted more foul language at him then rode off doing the tosser hand motion.

then he comes up behind me very close to try and piss me off, but there was traffic so i cut through it leaving the blind asshole to sit in the jam

Anyhow I have to work now. I don't need to justify my actions anymore. People on this forum who know me, know that I am not some maniac hard man who goes round looking for trouble at the drop of a hat. Those who don't are free to make up their own minds

The car was in the middle of the road. It had puled all the way out in front of me without even looking, or worse still, with scant regards to my safety.

So if it was in the middle of the road...you swerved to hit him...as you have excellant bike skills you surely could have avoided him.....but you choose not to....surely then this is reckless cycling.

Though i'm sure the big bad car driver was to blame for you purposely crashing into him, people pull out of side junctions on others all the time, get used to it ffs, yes, there are some idiot rich kids who drive cars like that, but there are also a lot of very enthusiastic drivers that do, and I can't imagine they'd be overly pleased with you purposely crashing into them, how about if you jumped a red light and someone decided to nudge into you, only at 5mph of course, just to teach you a lesson, i'm sure we'd never hear the end of that.

You are a mechanically savvy boy so I am sure you have noticed the drivers of these fabulous motors are covered in solid fucking metal. Trapped in that hunk of shit listening to the radio, air con on their fat asses, coffee in hand, windows up with a fraction of the sensory awareness a cyclist has.
How many times has a cyclist fallen asleep at the wheel, or crushed a family because he was using a lap top or driven home after an 8 hour drinking binge killing a cyclist on route, being so drunk he drove on with the man still on his bonnet!?

So we all agree cars are a little… little bit more dangerous than a bicycle, we must also realise an error of judgement made in a car can have a far more devastating effect than an error made cycling.

Cyclist put up with these errors of judgements as they are far more aware of the situation, they get it wrong and they are picking there teeth up from the floor and pissing in a bag for 6 months.

The odd wake up call does them no harm, it’s not the perfect answer but I bet it felt fucking great when the last thought that went through your head was where your wife would be when she got THAT call from the hospital.

Teaching a lesson about cycle awareness would have been to avoid a collision and then pull up alongside the driver and explain how he nearly hit you...and if it wasn't for the fact that you were an experienced cyclist, it could have been a nasty accident.

I think if a cyclist visibly slows down, they sometimes implicitly offer vehicles (whose drivers happen to be up to then paying Due C. and A.) some leeway to pull out, which they sometimes take. Maybe the driver wasn't looking. Maybe the driver didn't care. I think mikec has the confidence to assert his space and all power to that. Nontheless there's need to be careful of getting tempted to purposefully neglect our intangible contract with other road users: (something like) that we don't want anyone to get hurt, at the "end of the day".

Sometimes we let things happen that might damage things or people, but do we know in our hearts it serves no one? Maybe mikec's point wasn't really worth making in that way, if there was a message that the driver needed to hear.

I think people need to put this in perspective. Cyclists are getting hit and dying out there all the time, many times because of careless drivers. I've never heard of a driver getting killed because of a cyclist not looking and pulling out on him.

A driver pulls out in front of a cyclist, the cyclist decides to run into the car, no damage done to anyone, and you all defend the driver! Crazy!
