I got my father a book on watches that Soul recommended and it was a great success- it's been read cover to cover and is often out on the coffee table, steadily accumulating more bookmarks.

For this Christmas I'd like to get him a "built your own clock" kit, like this one, but preferably for less than 3,200 Euro, anyone got any pointers?

I don't mind spending a bit of money for something good quality, but I'm balking at three large.

I grabbed a couple as they were pretty cheap but it's a bit of a punt as a) the manufacturing is crowdsourced and b) no way to see or try before buying.

They look pretty nice but that's based on marketing photos (they might have used hobbits or giants as models!). Hope they are decently built.

I worked in Ernest Jones for a few months one summer, many years ago.

We were told that if anyone brought a fake in for a battery, strap, etc etc then we should take it out the back and smash it, then bring it back out and hand the mangled parts to the punter.

Needless to say we never did this.
