  • You bollocks... a Porsche can be acquired for a couple of grand.

    Ask NurseHolliday.

Actually I bought mine for £250.

  • Upheld...

  • I don't think snobbery or elitism sell products.

Porsche are stunning. So are Rolex.

That's the wonderful thing about opinions - we all have them. But being the herd creatures we are quite often we opt into something because of 'belief' and a presumption around something. Some brands are masters at generating this - but it doesn't mean their product is essentially better.

I was at Alsal Watches a couple of weeks ago and it came up in conversation that the ETA movement in a Junghans Max Bill (just under a grand) is the exact same movement in a good deal of high end IWCs (quite a lot over several grand).

My point being that price does not always reflect quality and if you buy the likes of Rolex and believe you're paying just for quality and cutting edge design (actually they've just found a formula for them that works and constantly rehash it) and you're not paying above and beyond for a perceived value and a brand reputation then you're exactly the kind of person that Rolex cherish. A mug with deep pockets :)

  • Actually I bought mine for £250.

The exception, by no means the rule. Dismissed.

  • I like Rolexes. A lot.

But I don't reckon I'm a mug with deep pockets. I've just bought them when I've had the money.

  • Although I'm not sure what the argument is? You wouldn't buy a Rolex/Porsche because they don't change their design?

A Rolex is not comparable to a Porsche IMO. Rolexes look nice, people lust after them, but underneath they're a bit fragile and need a lot of love. More like a Ferrari or Lambo. The Porsche 911 hasn't changed a huge amount, but then how many other cars have led their class for the last 50 years, constantly being updated to compete with more modern and advanced competitors? Don't be duped into thinking each new 911 is just given a once over by a small team and then sent out into the wild. Each car is a new car. They just look similar. You can buy a car that's more 'unique' and worry about it, or you can buy a car that works. Every time. And will work better than all of its competitors. If you're more worried about what the other buyers of the car you own are like then you're an idiot. Same for watches. Ooh, only kids and wannabe rappers wear G-Shocks. Or people who want a cheap watch that won't break when you fall off your bike from 6ft in the air. That's what it was designed for, that's what it does.

  • That's like the whole servicing argument. Buy an expensively engineered piece of equipment and pay the price.

People who assume that because they've bought a Rolex and don't need to service it or look after it correctly are the same people who think that paying £800 for a service interval on a sports car is a riff-off.

Spend a lot of money buying it - spend a lot of money looking after it.

  • ^ You Squire are the exception not the rule. Upheld!

OK so my tongue is half in my cheek but surely you see the point?

  • I'm sitting on the fence on this one. Rolex are gash in my humble opinion. Porsche are gorgeous.

  • They are both demonstrations of exquisite engineering and belief in what has been achieved and will be achieved.

  • Wait now I'm even more confused.

I'll return to my cupboard under the stairs.

  • ^^ Rolex ruined any credibility they might have had when they started going after the Arab market. They have created some of the most repulsive eye-watering monstrosities ever to have shamed this planet.

  • Not all of us shop in Knightsbridge.

They're are some utter monstrosities over here. I'll try and get some pictures and stick 'em up in here.

  • Whats not to like?

A luxury brand would be foolish not to exploit overseas markets.

  • Nothing whatsoever. I love mine.

  • What does it explore?

  • And who certified it?

  • It explores deep pockets...

  • A pal of mine took it as his staff watch and put it away. I then paid him the following year and took the watch at a discounted rate.

I've done it with all of the watches I've bought.

  • The word 'superlative' on the face is entirely unnecessary. It's really not that great. Sorry but it just leaves me cold. It's a bit dull.

  • It is a bit Tsoooooooooper.

On the flipside, pretty sure I will experience Diashock after the Christmas Party.

  • ^ Far simpler and more elegant than the Rolex. Probably a better movement too, those GS spring-drive automatic movements are the stuff of legend.

  • in my head it sums up like this.
you buy a rolex for the case and you buy a gs for the content.

  • I think you just sized me up as a sham.

    A packaging whore.

    You're right.

  • Lol! Love this thread. I'm such a mug for beautiful watches but can't be doing with overblown prices based on reputation as a brand. Show me how good your watches are and demonstrate genuine value - don't tell me you've been doing it for years.

Probably due to my background in advertising/marketing am overly cynical when it comes to that but hey :)
