  • that one is £50, the buckle alone costs £10, and a lot of work goes into it.

  • That's nice and not so pricey...

  • Hurry up and finish mine Mumble.

  • just waitng for the hardware, squabble bollox.

  • Am seriously thinking about pulling the trigger on one of these:

A baby GS. Actually given the choice between a Grand Seiko and a Rolex I'd go Seiko every time, how about you?

  • Let's ask Pisti...

i am going to be making some more straps, so let me know if you are interested.

well done. i keep looking at your strap its growing on me.

  • Let's ask Pisti...

Joe, dude, that's the thing. I reckon, and I'm not speaking from the perspective of a misinformed ignoramus (although I can't speak for Pisti) that a Grand Seiko or the high end Seikos generally are just as good, if not better, than Rolex. This is coming from having compared the two next to each other.

The only thing the high end Seikos don't have is the same brand chutzpah as a Rolex but that's what I kind of like about them.

  • I really dislike Rolex, mainly for the same reason I dislike Porsche; no matter how well a product sells/works, that is no excuse to just stop designing new stuff. I know that "under the bonnet" they're different, but not having any variation in design over such a long period is just lazy. Seiko every time for me!

  • To dislike Porsche is to dislike the consistent demonstration of evolution and refinement of design.

  • Nope, I think their cars are ugly and boring. If I were to ever spend that much on a car, I would want something that is a bit unique, not the same as the next rich persons. IMHO etc.

  • They're no longer the toys of the wealthy if I can afford one.

  • They're no longer the toys of the wealthy if I can afford one.

Bollocks mate. The majority on this forum for example are studenty types who can just about afford a half decent bike. The old gits like you and I who might have a few quid to play with are the minority.

  • To dislike Porsche is to dislike the consistent demonstration of evolution and refinement of design.

Design and its constant refinement and evolution has nothing to do with brand and everything to do with an aesthetic that is the passion of an individual or collective of designers.

See thats the point. The likes of seiko have followed the fashion.

The likes of Rolex, Porsche etc have not.

    They are the pioneers.

  • You bollocks... a Porsche can be acquired for a couple of grand.

    Ask NurseHolliday.

  • I think Seiko (well, the one I am wearing right now) is a nice example of simple, clear design- second/minute/hour/day/date, luminous dial markings, satin metal case, done.

That it is a fully automatic movement satisfies the mechanical-nerd in me, and the purchase price means that if I do destroy it in an accident it's not the end of the world.

  • What's money got to do with it? Got to do with it?

Time is the enemy. If you make something Timeless it is 4 eva.

  • See thats the point. The likes of seiko have followed the fashion.

    They are the pioneers.

This is why I've bought Rolex and would buy Porsche.

Opinion born out of snobbery. Sorry to sound rude but it's very common and misguided. The Grand Seikos are a step apart from Seiko as you probably consider them (cheap, functional, watches for the masses). Do you know much about Grand Seiko and how their origination has been aped by some of the snootier European brands?

  • You bollocks... a Porsche can be acquired for a couple of grand.

    Ask NurseHolliday.

Exactly! A couple of grand is a great deal of money to a lot of people. Did you know that statistically speaking the majority of people don't have enough savings to cover their arse for more than 3 months if they lost their job?

  • It is not snobbery it is Brand integrity.

If you cluch at straws, straws you will clutch.

Sorry but this is gush. Don't presume that the more 'elite' brands are originators. They are not.

  • I don't think snobbery or elitism sell products.

Porsche are stunning. So are Rolex.

    What about Rapha?
