  • Always been a fan of this one.

    I'm sporting a semi.

  • Joe, what's wrong with that automatic black military Seiko? Nice watch, tough, unpretentious, great movement for the lolly.

I've never owned a non digital chronograph, so if I'm gonna get a new watch I may as well go in that direction... Currently looking at Steinhart, Fortis and CWC pilot's chronographs... We'll see what pops up...

  • Do not want... I was under the impression the 1st gen was an automatic... Got my eye on one of these now...

I have one of these that I may want to exchange for pound notes. Jose....?

I shall put it towards the Portuguese fund...

  • PMing now...

  • I'm in Bilbao at the mo and will be back Sunday.

  • I shall put it towards the Portuguese fund...

Which one are you going for?

    Can't wait to see it.

  • Is that your wrist Wayne?

    Cool watch!

  • 'tis my wrist - Me mates moody [but very well done] Bell&Ross.

I've got big old wrists and that thing still looks as chunky as hell - I really like the B&R's as objects but they are a bit too clunky when worn IMO

  • Fakes are an interesting topic. What are people's attitudes to them?

  • i'm still undecided on fakes. I want to know more about them, if i was to wear one it would have to be a very good copy & waterproof.

do you know where your mate got that Bell & Ross Wayne?

  • I don't see the point in fake watches... An (honest) homage is fine if it's done well and uses similar quality components but why buy something that looks like the real thing when it plainly isn't? Everyone loses IMHO...

  • What about this one BlueQuinn?

    http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/OMEGA-SPEEDMASTER-PROFESSIONAL-GENUINE-/220842387120?pt=UK_Jewelery_Watches_Watches_MensWatches_GL&hash=item336b3b66b0

That is a very bad fake.
No Speedmaster has a 3 register calendar on the face.
No automatic Speedmaster has a "first watch worn on the moon" caseback
The moonwatch caseback is completely different to the real thing anyway
Clasp is wrong (recent Omegas don't use pressed metal)

  • he got it from Turkey where his old man has retired to… apparently there are 3 levels of 'homage' available for each watch.

In fairness he only bought it cos he's looking to get a proper B&R and wanted to make sure he was happy with the size and wearabilty of it as an everyday watch

  • Fakes are an interesting topic. What are people's attitudes to them?

    I don't see the point.
I've had a couple and they have been shit quality. They always are.
For the same money I can buy a cheap and decent quality watch if it has Seiko, Citizen, Casio, etc on the dial.

If I want something that looks like the real thing, well basically it's because I want the real thing. Even if the fake was totally convincing, I would know.

I feel the same about MR2 Ferrari replicas, or Raleighs with Colnago decals

Thankfully I earn enough these days to have bought the watches I really wanted (though I still bought them second-hand. I'm not dumb enough to pay £3.5k for a TAG), and I have to say that the pleasure they give me continues long after the cost is forgotten.

  • I don't see the point in fake watches... An (honest) homage is fine if it's done well and uses similar quality components but why buy something that looks like the real thing when it plainly isn't? Everyone loses IMHO...

I agree. I just wouldn't enjoy it. However, I know people who wear them all the time...

"it looks the same, it tells the time accurately and cost a tenner! Why would would bother paying for an original?!".

There are loads of reasons why I wouldn't buy a fake, but none that the type of people alluded to above would value. I think attitudes towards these sorts of things, where the craft and skill involved is virtually abstract given that it's out of sight and doesn't make it perform any better than a cheap quartz watch, are interesting. Where do you draw the line?

For instance, I wouldn't shop in, say, Topman for similar reasons. I don't want to pay for or fund the mass production of poorly manufactured goods that copy indiscriminately from 'proper' designers, made in anonymous factories in far away places and sold by unscrupulous people. Hmm.

Shall we go back to nice pictures of watches?

  • Finepix knows more bout fakes than anyone on here, not sure if he still posts though...

  • The "it tells the time" argument is interesting, because the 3 I have had, well, they didn't.
You raise the point about the craftsmanship being hidden. It's true. I can't tell the time very well on a skeleton because the face is so busy, so on all my watches the movement is something I rarely see.
But I have zero interest in quartz watches. It is all about the engineering and care that went into making the watch for me. That's why my dream watch was/is the Speedmaster Professional - such is it's legendary reliability and the fact each part of the movement is balanced and polished individually. It's why I dithered for so long about getting a Monaco, because it's all bling over quality really, until I found one at a price I considered justifiable. It's why I have an interest in tuning fork movements and other technological blind alleys.

To prove that good mechanical watches can be cheap, today, my watch is an Indian HMT Sona which was about £8, and is thin, light, elegant and nicely made, with a licence-built Citizen 17 jewelled movement, famed for its dependability.

  • Always been a fan of this one.

It's the profile that ruins it for me...

  • Its what I like best.

  • it's built a bit like the seiko bullheads

  • Looks like a Saab.

  • Sorry, read the original post completely wrong.

Buy a 2nd Gen anyway. Awesome watch :0)

What model is that? I like it.
