I don't think everyone understands the dibs system, even older members. You can't put an ad up and expect everything else to go on via PM. A dibs is a quick way to say 'I'll have that'. Then follow up with a private message.

I've suggested this before but I think it got under... As the classifieds section is very busy and always growing, it is hard for the sellers and buyers to keep track of what's happening.
My suggestion is based on another forum I'm active, which sells photography equipment. Most of that stuff is much more expensive than the average sale on here, and it has a successful track record.
The system is as follows:
1) Seller puts the ad in a thread, including a price
2) All communication, "bidding" etc. is done on the thread
3) PM will only be used once seller and bidder have agreed on price to exchange payment/address.
4) Seller states when item was collected/handed over/posted
5) Buyer states that item is paid for/item received. This way, the whole process is much more transparent. People will be able to see who bought what from who at what price and everybody knows who the successful buyer is (in case someone goes awol).
I think the dibs system is useless and it's very annoying if many people dibs in the thread, some PM, some only PM, some email... Argh. Hard to keep track who was first, especially on very sought after items.
Hope that make sense!

I suggest you never use eBay if you are getting frustrated with a non binding dibs system. You haven't truly encountered fuckwits until you start selling on eBay...

I see a 'dibs' post as a way of letting other potiental buyers know that your already in the process of PM'ing and shite. Never felt ity carried much weight with the actual seller. I mean why not a direct PM?

............Yada...yada...yada.... For me, dibsing an item involves my bringing it 200 miles to London especially for you.
Opinions welcome.Though at the minute it's all at my house in hackerney....;D
SO....If anyone wants the Really nice Evans frame, the really nice Enfield frame with unique seat stays, the crabby trek frame, a pug beater frame, or a really nice complete 70's 531 peugeot, then shop away...there is hardly enough room to swing a cat...

I'm up in the PMs gazumping with offers over asking price whilst you dibsing and trying to get the seller to drop the price and post for free.
That's where all the rot stems from, then.
