I've suggested this before but I think it got under... As the classifieds section is very busy and always growing, it is hard for the sellers and buyers to keep track of what's happening.
My suggestion is based on another forum I'm active, which sells photography equipment. Most of that stuff is much more expensive than the average sale on here, and it has a successful track record.
The system is as follows:
1) Seller puts the ad in a thread, including a price
2) All communication, "bidding" etc. is done on the thread
3) PM will only be used once seller and bidder have agreed on price to exchange payment/address.
4) Seller states when item was collected/handed over/posted
5) Buyer states that item is paid for/item received. This way, the whole process is much more transparent. People will be able to see who bought what from who at what price and everybody knows who the successful buyer is (in case someone goes awol).
I think the dibs system is useless and it's very annoying if many people dibs in the thread, some PM, some only PM, some email... Argh. Hard to keep track who was first, especially on very sought after items.
Hope that make sense!
though it seems quite cumbersome, i quite like the idea of this. Would take it to another level of seriousness. On the other hand, I think it's fair play that friends go before unknowns even if the unknown pm'd first.
Also like the idea of keeping prices in posts, great to have a record of what things have sold for before

First i must publicly offer my grovelling thanks to wingedangel for helping me out here! One of the straightest trading folks on here.
As i said, most of my experience on here has been excellent. everyone who has bought from me has been a pleasur to deal with, even the buyer of a less-than-perfect bike, which was a mistake on my part.
Skully put me straight on the dibs versus pm system on my first Advert. I think public dibs keep everything open, and perpetuate the spirit of trust that makes this such a succesful forum.
That puts even more responsibility on the dibser. When you dibs, you are in apublic place, and have"spat on yourhand" in front of the forum.
If a dibser has to back out for any reason, its easy to post a follow up, cancelling the dibs due to whatever. The forum then see that you have acted properly.
If you dont follow up, the seller is quite at liberty to post "re-offered due to whatever". If you end up being named, so be it. It keeps up standards of conduct. -

that sounds all good

Thanks to all for this discussion. I'm just pleased to finally learn what 'dibs' and 'pm' finally mean - as a newbie to the site it's not overly clear but then i suppose it provides a good incentive to learn quick!

Spitting on your hand prior to shaking the hand of the buyer is an old gypsy horse-trading tradition and signifies that a deal is made. If either party back out, the deal has been witnessed and reputations are at stake!
As we are trading our steel horses (well the ones worth haggling over are steel anyway), in the modern equivalent of a public market, the ananogy is good i think. -

Well Tiswas, the TA adapter was only a minor delay. Ive had prople never contact me back at all. If anyone had that much time on their hands, they could look through my posts at the Trek frame and the first dibsers on the Evans.
It would be helpful to let my know if youre going away though, cos the item can then be passed to the second dibser. I always try to point out on my ads about my 'double life' and when I will next be in town or offline.Anyways, you popped back up again and honoured your dibs, so there we are folks. Tiswas is ok, just a bit absent minded sometimes!
Heehee!
See you at the end of the week, with your Adapteur. -

what does "dibs for a friend" mean?? (Other than 'dibs for a friend', obviously).
What I mean is .... does... "for a friend" make any difference to a dibs?! Dibs or don't dibs, but leave your mate out of it?

I don't see how you think you were robbed, you hadn't PM'd the seller or posted on the thread for the best part of a day so he bumped his thread to say the wheels were still available, I saw the ad contacted the seller and agreed a price before you had replied on the thread. You can't expect someone to hold something, if there's real money on the table.
If the classifieds were run to a strict system like on AVforum then everyone would know the rules and have to abide by them, saying you're interested and asking for postage quotes is not the same as saying "yes I'll take it"

no worries you aint the first and defintiely not the last to grab a bargain from me. Enjoy the wheels.

I appreciate money talk first, but what I normally do in that case is I am trying to give the original dibser a reasonable deadline if I havent heard back from them - perhaps something to consider, as I actually do understand the disappointment when you dibs because you are at work or whatever, and then come home only to find out somebody else did not respect your dibs and took the item literally off your hands.
giving a deadline as a seller shows you as a fair person, and most people understand and dont have hard feelings even if they fail to respond because of some unforeseen circumstances. -
