TT bike. This one:
I believe the Specialized Win Tunnel will be addressing the issue of massive spacer stacks on top of the stem soon.

Getting rid of them (and bonding in a home-made star-nut replacement) is on the list of things to do. But it's a long, long list...

Couple of quid on quick tyres (eg. GP TTs, GP4000s or Supersonics) + latex tubes will make a bit of difference too

^^^ I was running Ultremo HTs on PlanetX 80/101 tubs, but I missed not having powah, so started using my 50mm crabon fibber Powertap hubs, with the Schwalbe ZXs. The Plan is to fit Rotor 3D+ cranks (got), Rotor Aero chainring (ordered) and a Power2Max S spider (about to order) and then run with the 808 Firecrests with Corsa CX III tubs. If it's not too windy next week I might go back to the PlanetX/Ultremo HT tub combo, and try riding by feel. Yuck.

Riding on feel (and being able to ride on feel) is a good thing to practice. If your power meter dies a death or computer falls off etc. you need to be able to a) motivate and b) pace yourself effectively. I did a club TT this evening on the pursuit bike for that exact reason, not for fast times or anything (I'd already been training in the morning) but just to sort out pacing with only minimal data (speed/cadence/distance) in front of me.

Well, when I say riding on feel, what I really mean is riding to the HRM. 175bpm for the first half, 180bpm for the quarter of pain (half to three-quarters), full beans for the last quarter.

I wouldn't use heart rate. Affected by too many things and is pretty misleading with lots of lag.
-
• #7088
I don't use it rigidly, but I still find it a useful measure of how hard I'm working. I know that if I go above 175bpm for the first half of a 10, I can't maintain that pace. Seems reasonably consistent so far.

Duh.. when people use them and they explode, Xav gets a free run at victory that day.

Powermeter fails. Race over.
No data means you didn't ride it.
In fact, the whole bike should go in the bin as it's now tainted.

club TT on Weds - managed to be only 1s slower than two weeks ago despite it being considerably windier today.
Although Jeff Jones still managed to break the course record and put 2m30s in 8.3 miles into my time
Ho hum :)

Jeff J is rapid.
Only 2.30! You should be proud!!
-
• #7093
Indeed Jeff is very rapid - but the course is only 8.3miles long (although its not a fast course at all - somewhat "sporting")
Jeff's avg speed: 28.3mph
Mine: 24.8mph. -

That's absolutely bananas, feeding must have been crazy. I did a 138km scratch race at Forest City Velodrome in Canada once, I was chucking up from the g-forces after a 53kph attacks, was mad.
TBH, the London Olympic velodrome hasn't had an attempt yet, that's ripe for the picking if someone wants a track record there! Only problem is the £500/hr booking fee or whatever it is
The London Olympic Velodrome would be OK for the hour record. However, Lee Valley Velodrome wouldn't be particularly good for it unless you could afford to hire the building in it's event mode (with temperature and pressure controlled) as it was set up for the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Normal operating conditions aren't particularly fast.
I still reckon Herne Hill would be pretty damn good if you could pick the conditions. That Tarmac is bloody smooth and the milder banking is less fatiguing to ride.

Finally got a 25 right. 54:18 on Etwall, three and a half minutes off my pb. Stoked.

Nice one. Congrats!! A good feeling that.

Cunts. Cunts everywhere.
On a happier note, I took Xavier's advice at the club 10 this evening, took off the Wheels of Powah, refitted the Planet X 80/101mm tubs, and rode just on feel. I got a course PB (by 80 seconds from April this year) and I think the pacing was pretty good - I was definitely hanging on for the last half a mile, after having put in an effort to pass my 2 minute man cleanly.
It's 10 seconds away from my 10 mile PB from a fortnight ago, but it's difficult to compare the two, given that this course is slower - it starts at the bottom of a 50ft hill and finishes on top of it. And round here a 50ft hill is considered a mountain. Also, I got held up quite badly by a car patiently waiting behind my 3 minute man at about 8.5 miles in. On the other hand, the conditions were excellent (warm and only a very gentle crosswind) and I was running Ultremo HT tubs rather than Ultremo ZX clinchers.
Zipp 808s, Power2Max power meter and a skinsuit to follow. Sub-24 should be well in reach then.
Oh, and after years of refusing to do TTs, Cycliste has just bought a Planet X Stealth frame. In the XS size. 650c wheels-a-go-go.
