I've read the original RVLR, and it specifically says pedal reflectors. On the TT forum it has been suggested that ankle bands are an acceptable alternative, but if that's true it must be in an amendment I haven't read yet.
The RVLR (Schedule 20 part 1) says that there is *no specified size * for pedal reflectors, as long as they are amber and there is one on the front and rear of each pedal (4 in total) you should be good. My reading of that (unless it has been superseded by amendment) is that some small strips of amber retroreflective tape stuck to your pedal would meet the legal requirement. That would work for those of us with proper pedals :-)
If I don't have this shit, will I be DQ'd or is it just going to be some bored copper hassling me?
I have some reflective tape but it's white/silver 3M stuff, not amber.

TTforum thread says CTT ankle bands will be OK as far as competition and insurance go, although technically the plod could still stop you.

They'd have to catch me first dick dastardly cackle

Where was I?
Oh yeah, FFS! I might put some white 3M tape on anyway and hopefully they don't bother me.

Hippy, I've got some amber self adhesive strips: PM your address if you want it.

Pedal reflectors have always been the law, for donkeys years. Have they suddenly started enforcing it?
I use these on my bike in the winter. I don't want to be hit by a car and have my lack of legal reflectors damage my chances of a claim.
Sadly they only fit double sided spd pedals but there do seem to be a variety of options here.

Cheers Scilly, I'm going to trim some of my 3M tape to fit the shoe or pedal.
I didn't have anything for the previous two years and nothing happened but I got a bit of a shock seeing it mentioned on the CTT site.
I'm running an Exposure Flare so if any judge rules against me in a SMIDSY case (assuming I'm still alive) I will hunt them down and SMIDSY them right back in the face.

Speedplay (and the new TriRig pedal, and Aerolite) present a particular problem by the cleat wrapping around the pedal and no rotating part of the pedal being accessible to which you could bolt a reflector bracket. I think to be strictly legal, you'd have to attach BS stamped reflectors to the cleats, and then argue that since the pedals are useless without cleats, the cleats are part of the pedal.

BS in this case = bull shit.
-
• #4686
just thought some of those options might work for those of us on shimano/look pedals when racing.
Never mind speed play, I'd like to see the police try to fix a reflector to the tri-rig mercury.

Speedplay (and the new TriRig pedal)
oooops you mentioned that already

I'm midfoot too, so the pedal is probably being obscured by the back of my foot. I reckon some 3M tape on the back of my shoes should stop the nozzles asking questions.

I'd go with Tester on this one- the cleat forms part of the pedal system with a Speedplay pedal, and the cleat has a nice large flat area front and rear to attach a reflector to.
You could epoxy the ones from that SPD adapter to a Speedplay cleat, and have the BS mark.

You could also argue that the shoe forms part of the pedal system - as pedal + cleat is pretty useless without a shoe....
-
• #4691
By that logic, the entire system will be useless without Hippy attached, so you may as well cover his arse in reflectors... plenty of space there.

PB. I couldn't see the results sheet properly but it was
either 23:37 or23:32. Either way it beats my previous PB of 23:56 (15/06/10 on the same course). We'll see what it was exactly when the results appear online.Previous seasons best was 24:07 (again on the same course).

Hippy is the exception to that rule:

SM-PD58 reflector that comes with OEM SPD-SLs is available aftermarket, could probably be adapted pretty easily to Keos too. Speedplay users will find yet another reason to rue their foolishness
I have some of these, if anybody wants them for some bizarre reason.

Did the Bexley 10 on the tandem on Wednesday just gone, on the ride back from Dover. Would have been rude not to really. Took the panniers etc off – first time I'd ridden the bike unladen in ages so the handling scared me a bit, but was a good blast. The number from the timekeeper seems a little faster than my Garmin suggests but whatever. An experience to be repeated, I think, preferably when there hasn't been three weeks of touring and no rest preceding it. Got our sights on the course record...

The pics look epic, Tom. What time did your Garmin record?
-
• #4698
23 something. Faster than my solo one but not by much. But we were faster to the turn and can't have been slower on the down. Who knows!
