  • Now that the B-screw is all the way in to accommodate for the 40T the RD doesn't want to shift past halfway the cassette when the clutch is on. This is as expected I suppose to avoid too much tension/pull on the whole thing?

  • Or your chain is too short

  • that's amazeballs

  • Without the chain it moves 2 sprockets further up but not all the way to the end.

  • It may not work in all the frames. Is way over the recommended usage. Pictures would help.

  • It's a Canyon Grail L size. Mine is from 2019 but I don't think the geometry has changed so that means a chainstay of 425mm.

For chain size I used https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/chain-length and 430mm for the chainstay length, giving a 114 links result.

But like I said, even w/o the chain the RD doesnt go all the way up when clutch is on. (And the FD is in small ring). With cluth off there is no problem.

  • w/o the chain the RD doesnt go all the way up

You mean into high gears (smaller cogs)? If it won't make the two smallest cogs that's by design to stop cross chaining.

  • No, the big cogs.
I'm convinced the thing is fucking with my mind. Wanted to make a video to show you guys and now w/o chain the whole cassette is fine, with clutch on.

So I limited the video to the problem with chain and clutch on. In both big and small chainring https://vimeo.com/577235257

    Clutch off is fine.

Anyway thanks for the help everyone, but I'll take my bike to someone who is more knowledgeable than me because I clearly don't understand how the thing works.

  • I think you should buy a new bike..

Could it be the Di2 "crash mode" has kicked in? No idea if this makes sense

  • Yeah, it's trying to move but can't, so did you fuck the mounting up?

The same thing I tried to explain to sweedee in this or another thread. Basically is the RD seated where the B-screw etc is in the right spot? It's possible to clamp it down with the b-screw in such a way that it can't move further up the block.

  • Yeah, from a few pages back here:
    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/197839/?offset=4775

Take pics of the B-screw and where it's all mounted

  • I screwed in the B screw until there was enough space between RD and cassette as shown in the amateur youtube instruction videos. I wasn't aware I could fuck that up too.

  • It's not about where the B-screw is, it's more about where you've clamped the RD on itself (which does impact the B, but that's not primary concern).

  • Thanks for that link to the other thread, missed that. Here are few photos, don't know if it's the angles you need.

  • Is the top piece of the RD, the bit connected to the replaceable hanger, on those little bump stop grooves?

If you pull the RD up, does the B-screw always hit the "stop"? There's not a lot of meat to grip on there.

If there's no chain on, it moves up the whole block, right? ie. I assume you've checked the limit screws already.

  • To me it looks its installed in the right place and there's room to go up the cassette. Bent hanger maybe?

  • If it moves up the block with no chain, there's nothing in the RD to stop it so it must be something chain related (or fucked internals). Did you size it off the Big Big?

  • Looks like it's bent in a bit but that could be camera distortion.

If it shifts with no chain though, unless the bend means the angle its swinging on is contact a cog and so it can't move. I always straighten mine first. But if you don't have a tool you could try sticking something under the B-screw so it's further away from the cassette with the chain still on and see if it shifts then

  • Again, if you remove chain and wheel does it shift all gears? It's the same in the big or small chainrings? When you go to as up as it let's you does it make a whirring noise before going down one step?

  • It shifts fine with a chain when the clutch is off. It goes all the way to big-big. As soon as I turn the clutch on it stops at the 4th sprocket, both in big and small chainring.

    Video with clutch off: https://vimeo.com/577286492

  • For chain size I used this calculator https://www.omnicalculator.com/sports/chain-length and added an extra link to be on the safe side.

  • If it shifts fine with clitch off

How stiff is the clutch? Pn the rear of it looking direct at b screw you can also adjust the pretension on the clutch. How much riding have you done on that rear mech, have you ever had the clutch apart and greases it? I bet it needs greasing if not.

When a fat as fuck friend borrowed my mtb he has this issue. I took the clutch apart and greased it and it was fine.

Maybe the clutch spring is too stiff and thus mech says no.

  • FYI I'm.running a 40t on my grail.

  • second the adjustment of the clutch. i've had this happen before. if it shits fine with the clutch off then obviously that is the issue. they are pretty easy to adjust.

  • edit what @skinny said, rewatched the video and don't look terrible for such big cassette in a double. Still, if there's room to add one or two links I'd try that.
