Two weeks of riding in the Scottish Borders, which involves a lot of climbing- 12 speed MTB groups (Deore and XTR) have shifted perfectly, under significant load, whilst going uphill, every single time. I’m very impressed with them.
This is (IIRC) Ultraglide? Whatever it’s called it would be awesome for the same tech to be in GRX, and all the other groups.

I know the topic of a 40T cassette on for example a shimano RX805 has been discussed to death but can't find the exact conversations. So probably a stupid question but I wasn't sure if it works with an SLX M7000 cassette? Anything special about those?

nope works just as well as m8000 and m9000

Swapping the hg700 11-34t for a m7000 11-40t as mentioned last week. According to the box it needs the same 1.85mm spacer but after installation, the m7000 has some play in it. Am I doing something wrong?
-
• #8286
It should be alright, but you can always add another mm spacer
-
• #8287
What do you mean "the same" 1.85mm spacer?
If you put road 11s onto road 11s freehub it shouldn't need a spacer (normally, fuck knows what Mavic and other knobhead manufacturers do) but 11spd MTB will need a spacer on 11s road freehub.

There's a 105 Cassette that use the same sizing as MTB 11 speed, quite possibly this is the hg700 mentioned by @MisterTomTom

Yes, I have been using the hg700 cassettes on both my road and gravel bikes, with the spacer. It's also printed on the box. Left is the hg700, right is the m7000 I'm trying to use.

Weird standard 1.85mm spacer should be enough, I have the same setup on my tourer. If there is still play in the cassette check the lockring?
Other solutions: add a 1mm spacer or replace the 1.85mm one with a 2mm (not ideal) or swap to a mtb body on the hub if possible at all?
-
• #8292
I have done this straight up swap last month and used the same spacer. Check you're installing all the spacers between cogs and that the lockring tread on the freehub is clean and allows for it to be screwed in. The two cassettes should be equivalent.

Ok, so they've built it the same as their MTB cassettes (this is a new one to catch me out should I ever buy a "small" cassette again. Should still only need one spacer unless you have a weird freehub. You've still not mentioned the freehub though have you?
Another possibility is that the cassette has caught a burr on the freehub and isn't sliding on fully, as it's not straight but on an angle against the burr. Yes, I've also done this. :S
Or, have you managed to lose a middle spacer or put the cassette pieces on in the wrong order. Yes, I've also done this before.
If your wheel is stupid (I'm looking at your Mavic) you might need an extra spacer. Yes, I've had this issue before too.

Take a pic of the cassette, and freehub body

Looks like I tightened the lockring crooked last night and thereby ruined the thread on the freehub. I tried a few more times now and the cassette has no more play but the lockring is skewed. So thats probably a new freehub.

Yikes. Been there (probably hippy too judging from above).
Next time remember to do a turn CCW to set it flush before screwing it in -
• #8297
Yeah, I normally do it that way. Have swapped quite a few cassettes in the last years, never any problems. I should follow my own advice of not working on bikes in the evening, in a not properly lit room. Feel like an idiot. :)

I've definitely started one piss but I've never ruined a lockring from doing so. It's usually easy to tell that it's not going on easy and/or straight. Yeah, I always do a little backspin before tightening them up.

Pics worth a 1000 words innit :)
You should've led with this. Although now I know all about the trixxxxies 34T cassettes so silver lining for me :)

I only just noticed the lockring going in skewed when I tried again half an hour ago. When I had play in the cassette last night I was focussed on the spacer not being correct.
Microshift cassette with Shimano 11 speed groupset? Google says compatible, any comments on shifting and build quality?
