  • If you want a cheap groupset. Get 105.

Nothing else comes within a universe for quality for the value for money.

well I m not looking for a cheap groupset, but also not for sure to Di2 or EPS. £ 6-800 as budget

  • ^^

    Truest post in this thread.

  • Equivalent to "sky blue, water wet" in terms of insight, however.

  • All you MAMILs with DuraAce Di2 would get your arses handed to you by somebody fit with Claris :-)

But the SR me still beat the Claris me all other thinks beeing equal. Thats my mantra when its shopping time. Or rather the SR me is the happier me :-)

The insight I get from that post is just buy a groupset, and don't spend too much on it. It'll be fine.

I would therefore argue it is one of the most insightful posts in this thread.

  • compelling argument

You could trickle that down to any part of the bike and then what are we suppose to disagree on?

  • If the idea is to go fast, 105 and a 2 week training camp is a better use of £2k than DuraAce Di2. Of course, if you're not limited by money, have both.

  • One, two week training camp/holiday wold probably buy you 12 months of coaching.

...and from what I understand you use it only if it is sunny and warm... otherwise you go down to a complete 6800 for rainy and cold days...

  • Well, that depends on your level of poverty. If you're reasonably comfortable, you can DuraAce all the bikes! If you're properly rich, you don't ride in the cold and wet, because you go and live somewhere nice in the winter :-)

  • spoken like a true Cervelo owner :)

  • My Cervelo doesn't have a groupset, so it's irrelevant to this discussion :-)

  • All you MAMILs with DuraAce Di2 would get your arses handed to you by somebody fit with Claris :-)

Meh. Its the constant trouncing that makes me need nice things. Comfort buying innit.

Having said that my mate went from Athena to DA Di2, and is pretty depressed about it.

    Tyres, bar tape and saddles.

    They will forever be subjective.

I was thinking about this and isn't the best way to choose a groupset to buy the lightest one you can afford?

Reduced weight has an actual performance benefit, cycling is all about power to weight ratio. No?

What about if you have the money but you can't get 2 weeks off work?

    No.

    Style is everything.

Their are other qualities to consider. Otherwise nobody would have bought Shimano over the last few years.

Actually it's about kicking the bastard pedals down as hard as you can.

  • Sorry to bother with this question, do you know the real weight of it?

2152g for BSA BB'd groupset according to this. When I bought mine it was about 250g lighter than the equivalent Ultegra. But it depends on which cranks you have and what cassette you've got.

  • Actually it's about kicking the bastard pedals down as hard as you can.

But if you are a fat bastard all that kicking the pedals down as hard as you can will be wasted, surely?

  • What about if you have the money but you can't get 2 weeks off work?

'zackly. Too busy doing fillings and crowns...

  • What about if you have the money but you can't get 2 weeks off work?

If you're still going to work, you clearly don't have enough money.

  • But if you are a fat bastard all that kicking the pedals down as hard as you can will be wasted, surely?

If you kick the bastard pedal, in the same gear...

  • I was thinking about this and isn't the best way to choose a groupset to buy the most reliable and cheapest one you can afford?

Reduced weight has an actual performance benefit in a specific scenario like a hill climb where cycling is all about power to weight ratio, but weight weenie wheels and ultra light kit will lose all your time gains on the descent on the other side and the flat ride to the finish. No?

    Yes 100%

  • Reduced weight has an actual performance benefit, cycling is all about power to weight ratio. No?

No. Well, to some extent it is when you're in a hill climb competition, but 90% of the weight is rider and of the 2-3% which is groupset, the difference between the top groups and the equally functional third tier ones is only about 10%. So, in the most extreme case, getting the lightest groupset gets you about 0.1% performance gain. You can get more than that from cleaning your chain :-)
