  • Where do you live Furry? Planning a tour next year from Oslo through to Ålesund, down the coast to Bergen and through back to Oslo..

    Ålesund.
PM me. Maybe I can join you for a bit, or help in any way with logistics (bring cake).

  • If you're not group riding at fast pace, a compact is more than ever enough, and a lot nicer to ride with a close block in back. Compact and 11-25 or 11-27/28 would be perfect.
I want to put one on my all use bike. Far more useful for most people that 53X39. 50x11 is a massive gear. And 34x25 is a very practical gear.

    50x11 at 100rpm is 36 mph.

    I agree.
    50/34 + 11-25 gives 35.7 - 119.5 GI, with a tight cassette.

    I fancied trying 52/36
    52/36 + 11-25 gives 37.8 - 124.2 GI
I'd get more use out of my little ring (insert friday joke here), and I would have moar fast at the top end.

  • Compacts look fucking wank though.

  • No users on lfgss would do anything just for aesthetic reasons though...

Have you seen amey's with his touring cassette?

  • A 34 or 36 is fine if you're riding in very hilly terrain with long climbs, but something like 50/40 with a 12-28 would be the ideal combination in this country, where the terrain is mostly flat-to-rolling, with short, sharp climbs and descents. Would give a much more useable spread of gears in the little ring and eliminate the need to run poor chainlines in big-and big or little-and-little.

  • ^^ well I didnt have compact option when I bought the crankset otherwise would've gone for it

  • 12-28 is shit. The jumps between cogs are massive.

11-25 for hilly things, 11-23 for rolling, 11-21 for flat racing

True, but I can't fit three cassettes on my wheel.

  • I agree, rather change the chainring than to deal with 11-28 again.

It's even worse on a 8 speed block.

  • I'd say 11-23 for rolling, and 12-27 for hilly things (11 speed).

But 11-25 is a decent allrounder.

Thats me and my riding conditions. Others experiances may vary.

  • 11-25 for everything. Compact for the mountains, standard for everything else. Semi-compact for people with bi-polar

  • Well 11-25 with 52/36 was my thinking for everything.

The trouble with a compact is, much as it looks ace on paper, you end up cross chaining more. Because of the big gear change when using the front mech. We could discuss this all day.

  • 50/40/30
    13-29

    Haters >>>>>>>>>>>>>

  • As I was cataclysmic in starting this.

  • Catalystic I mean.

  • 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25 for everything.

  • There are no hills in this country that require a 34t inner ring.

Anything but 53/39 is for bed wetters

  • LOL.

    Okay Quintana

Watching people grind up Box Mountain in 34/27 is MEGALOLZ

watching people gear their super-light race bike to only ride the strava segments of the Surreynees mountains seems retarded...

The reality of swapping out a standard chainset for compact when you go somewhere decent for riding means a new chainset and a shorter chain to get decent shifting. If its bedded with the cassette then swap that too or enter in to a complex chain rotation method to match the wear on all your blocks.

I used to keep both, but in reality a compact does all well and means you have a well tuned setup if you select the right casette. 11-27 super record is on my wishlist as i miss the little cog on on my 12-27.

  • Also, you wouldn't find yourself under geared in most crits / road races with 50 x 12.
