  • Gimme more groupsets or gtfo.
Wanking over gear selection thread is over there >>>

    fixed 4 lyf (not)

  • there are no hills in the south of this country that require a 34t inner ring.

Anything but 53/39 is for bed wetters

    ftfy

  • "I see no hills!"

  • "I see no autobahn!"

    .

  • ftfy

    yr forgetting Devon

  • Compacts look fucking wank though.

Some cunt called dovvles borrowed my compact chain set for riding in France.

  • He never looked at the bike when he was in France.

  • An entire page devoted to that perennially dull standard vs compact debate? You dull cunts.

  • Its about cassette spacing you egit.

  • Are you sure? Dov seemed to insist that it's the chainring.

  • So... question about the Campagnolo groupsets for a friend who asked me. What's the best bang for the buck between mechanical Centaur/Athena/Chorus (I guess 2013 range, or is there something vastly better in 2014)? Any things to know before buying?

  • Yeah, Shimano.

centaur is 10s, athena is 11s (and comes in silver), chorus 11s and can change 5 gears with thumby.

get the best you can afford, campag is awesome, don't listen to hippy.
For best value just get veloce.

  • Check the offers on Total cycling. Athena is really nice. You cant dump as many gears as the top groupsets. But its hardly a vital feature.

    Carbon crankset Athena.

    Loads of other options....

  • Yeah, Shimano.

    must spread rep

I would not go for Centaur over Veloce, especially since they both perform just as well.

  • I've never used low end Campagnolo. But personally I reckon once you get down into the budget aero, Shimano is far better. If you're going to run Campagnolo, you have to pay the hipster tax.

Athena is a solid group. BB, cranks, brakes, and shifting are all very nice.

  • You can get a complete Ultegra groupset for ~£550, what does that get you in the world of Campag?

  • That'll get you Athena (£552.95*).

Veloce is £350* which I thought was a decent value, the Shimano 105 is £390*.

    *using Ribble as an example.

....as linked above. Athena with carbon cranks.

I cant be bothered to do the whole hieracy comparision thing. Its meaningless. They're both great. I love the campag levers. Some some Shimano ones. I love a solid click shift. Some like a smooth one. Meh.

  • If be tempted to build a bike with Athena if only the power torque crank system wasn't so half arsed.

I like the way the Total Cycling bundle mixes old Athena cranks with current kit. No idea what the crank length is though.

    Edit: 172.5 - guess I can't read.

  • Thanks a lot for your advices & info. About the relative value of Shimano, as I said, it's for a friend and he wants Campagnolo. Thanks for the Athena link, although I'll have to find a good deal with a compact crankset.

Tis a fair point. My mate that runs Athena has Chorus cranks come to think of it. Because he wanted a carbon upgrade from the silver Athena cranks he had.

The Athena doesnt make the aggresive click noise that SR does. And it doesnt seem to travel across numerous sprockets at the same speed. But the shifting is nice and crisp non the less,

  • Changing bearings on Campagnolo chainsets is MEGALOLZ.
