Which Groupset?

  • Ner ner ni ner ner

how can I respond to such wit?

  • ^^ everyone's got their preferences. It's all anecdotal. Everyone here is either trying to post-rationalise a choice or pre-rationalise one.

  • No, you're anecdotal...

  • Or see if you can find an Ultegra 6600 SL groupset. Its well nice, and meant to be on a par with DA from that era

  • No, you're anecdotal...

    so is your mum

  • That's just a story...

  • Your mum...

  • Pretty good one... so I've been told

  • Amey, this is bollucks. Why is ease of use mostly no? It couldn't be more simple to change gears. I've watched people shift on Shimano and Campag mechanical groups and it looks like a right pain. SRAM on the other hand is a breeze.

Design = no in what sense?

I'm not being a fan boy, I genuinely want to hear your reasoning, because don't get me wrong, I would love Di2.

Seems like you're being quite the Shimano fan boy though.

Yea i think I am comparing it to Di2 :P
And yes I am a shimano fanboy.

I guess it all comes down to preference.

I was trying to level the playing field (minus personal preferences) and try to know the reasoning behind Sram groups over shimano and campag.

  • where does sram fit in? except for Red being 'lightest groupset in pro peleton'?
    Value = no
Ease of use = subjective but mostly no (DafuqTap)
    Better design = no
    Aesthetics = subjective/debatable
    But mega hipster points

I've gone for Force rather than Ultegra on two of my bikes because:

    1. It's roughly the same price as Ultegra
    2. It's considerably lighter than Ultegra
    3. Shifting devices are a matter of personal taste, but I get on perfectly well with Doubletap now I've got used to it
    4. Aesthetics are indeed debatable, but generally I think Force is more attractive than Ultegra (and indeed that SRAM groupsets are generally more attractive).

The front shifting on the SRAM groupsets isn't as good as on Shimano/Campag (pre-Yaw shifters anyway) but on the Force groupset it's perfectly adequate if a bit sensitive to being set up just right.

I've got an Ultegra/XT mix on another bike. My own view, and again it's subjective, is that the shifting is better on the SRAM Force bikes. The lever throw on the SRAM shifters is less than on the Shimanos and there's a better 'click' on shifting. And I definitely prefer the braking with the SRAM brakes, although the Dura Ace calipers on the Dentist's Chair are very nearly as good. And the comparison's not fair anyway as the SRAM Force brakes have Swissstop Blacks in them, while the Dura Ace has Zipp Tangente pads.

Oh, and the winter bike's got Campag Veloce - at the moment the only one of my bikes to have Campag other than the Hetchins, and I don't think comparing mid 1980s Super Record with modern stuff is a useful comparison. It's nice, and the hood shape is excellent, but I still don't like the thumb shifter. Reminds me of my old Sora bikes.

Conclusion: First World problems. They all work, they're all roughly comparable in price and functionality if you compare equivalent groupsets, and each has its pros and cons.

The only real outlier is Di2. Bloody marvellous. Haven't tried Campag EPS yet, so I can't comment on that.

  • I'm not saying it won't be nice, or that I'm not jealous you can throw that much money at a winter bike, but honestly..

What would the ruling be on Di2 on a cross bike then?

Just out of mild curiosity you understand.

  • I've taken to the ' cupping the hoods' faux TT position. With campag i can still shift down the cassette as I gain speed. I loves me thumb paddles.

  • Yea i think I am comparing it to Di2 :P
And yes I am a shimano fanboy.

I guess it all comes down to preference.

I was trying to level the playing field (minus personal preferences) and try to know the reasoning behind Sram groups over shimano and campag.

Haha yeah exactly. To be fair I've only ever used SRAM, so I've nothing to compare it to, but the reason I went for it in the first place was purely due to physical appearance.

  • so i have a triple on the front on my cervelo (i know, kill me). i really do want to change out the crankset but i cant go to a triple without getting new levers and mech can i? ultegra from '09 btw.

  • Im in the unfamiliar, not to be repeated anytime soon position of looking for a new groupset.

I had Ultegra SL on my last bike worked fine for years. After reading this thread Im second guessing whether to go for the new 6750 I quite like it, the look of it anyway. Im surprised to hear it doesnt work as well as previous incarnations. I would have hoped it would have evolved.

Looking at Sram now, good bit pricier though. :(

  • so i have a triple on the front on my cervelo

  • How to fuck are you meant to fit the new Campag EPS battery inside the downtube?

  • why would anyone fit campag, let alone eps to their bike?

  • So they don't have to rotated their wrist fuckload just to shift onto the big ring?

  • Campag is very good, as is Sram. My only issue with Campag is using the thumb shifters when in the drops. The front trim thing can be annoying too.

  • My only issue with Campag is using the thumb shifters when in the drops.

I was convinced this would be impossible but I've never had any problem, can do it totally naturally. Maybe I just have long thumbs.

  • Thank fuck Shimano is doing away with their ridiculously tiny thumb shifter on their budget groupset (Claris replacing 2300).

I love the Campagnolo downshift and it's front trim, Shimano have a trim feature as well, but surprisingly unknown to a lots of people giving the vast number of customer whom kept bringing their new bikes back due to complaint that the chain was rubbing on the front derailleur when on the smallest/biggest cog.

  • Campag is very good, as is Sram. My only issue with Campag is using the thumb shifters when in the drops. The front trim thing can be annoying too.

I have tiny hands. But this has never been an issue for me. I think thats down to lever position and bar shape. Campact bar + plus flat hood position, gives easy access to the lever from the drops.

The front mech needs pecise set-up (at least with rotor rings). Then you can use the first 6 cassette rings without trimming, then 1 click to cross chain a touch.

Personally I love the levers of SR. The clickety click, and the ability to shift from anywhere on the lever.

Still intrigued by EPS. But even as a SR using MAMIL. I'm amazed at the price. Compare a Athena EPS upgrade package, with a Ultegra.

  • I thought that one of the things you bought with Campag was the ability to pay more for it than the equivalent Shimano equipment?

i.e. Campag restrict supply through their commercial strategy, which enamours them to higher end bike shops as they make more margin and can sell extra servcies- fit, foot-beds, etc etc.

  • Well I genuinely love mine. But have never once recommended it to a friend. I always just say get 105. Dont get sucked into buying overpriced stuff. Its a slippery slope.

Kinda like the way my parents used to smoke in front of us. Enjoying each drag, while saying 'never start this son'.
