Which Groupset?

  • I'm running a Chorus group with KMC SL11 chain on the winter bike which has been fiddled with once since installing in January (Owing to cable stretch).

I've also got Super Record with another company's cranks on the posh bike. This runs a Campagnolo chain at present but will be switched to a KMC as the chainrings and cassette are also due for replacement. The shifting has always been precise but then this bike does receive more attention per distance ridden compared to the other.

  • The KMC is a really nice chain, that seems to work well, and quietly (plus its light). I've never used the record chain though. Despite buying a Park tools campy 11spd tool thingie.

My front shifting is fine under load. But the mech was fiddly to set up because of my Rotor rings.

I was under the impression that shifting under load was a campagnolo speciality.

  • .... but then this bike does receive more attention per distance ridden compared to the other.

    Exactly.

  • Of the bikes that I have ridden this year there has been SRAM Force, Campag Record and Dura Ace Di2.

Of them all the Di2 is far and away the simplest, lowest maintenance groupset- and the best in terms of functionality.

It just works, all the time. Never needs adjustment.

I've charged the battery once this year, when it got to half full, after ~500 miles.

I use a KMC-S10SL chain, with Cannondale chainrings on a Hollowgram crank, and a DA 7900 cassette.

  • All record groups ive tried have been great. I still prefer my record 10 group to my SR 11 but thats not really a performance based opinion. More i like the look and hoods better and the levers feel more solid aswell. My sr levers can make abit of a rattling sound from time to time. No biggy but my record 10s dont.

My exp with campy says its pretty much setup and forget.. Good stuff.

  • Di2 is certainly fit and forget, particularly the Ultegra and newer Dura Ace which is very easy to fit. Since fitting the system in May, I've only had to charge the battery once, in 1200 miles of cycling.

Sounds like the return spring on the brake caliper. Its a common problem with weight weenie brakes, and one the reasons I went for slightly heavier calipers.

Thats what weird. My record 10 group has got zero gravitys with a really poor return spring yet no problems with rattleing. The SR 11 had both cantis and SR brakes mounted and they rattle is there regardless what i do. I think the play is at the bolt for the lever. Dont really bother me tho. Just abit annoying when it was newly installed to take away from that crisp feeling.

  • Kmc chains ftw. Don't need the silly campagnolo tool, and are accurate/ last ages

  • C'mon James keep it up... I can't wait to finally sort out the RED on my new LOOK... I've been too busy to get it done.

  • Yep but a few years old, not a new one...

  • Well, Ultegra Di2 is the same price as mechanical Dura Ace and the OP was asking asking Campy super record so I guess he has a bit of money to spend.

  • £1,100 for Ultegra Di2 at Bike 24.

£1,276 for mech DA on the same site.

I'd take the Ultegra Di2 every time.

  • Be interesting to see the prices for second hand 7970 Di2 when the 9000 stuff starts appearing.

  • When is electronic 105 going to hit the shelves?

  • I think the 11 speed Alfine Di2 is really interesting- 1X11 setup with a belt drive- you have a bike that basically never, ever requires maintenance.

  • ^I'd love to try the SRAM hydro STI, I'm keeping Apex until they make a move on that.

  • If it ever happens.

  • Yes, there is that.

  • When is electronic 105 going to hit the shelves?

I'd say never, rather than the feasibility it's business constraint, isn't it?
If they'd have gone the campag way i.e. the top end and the start of the mid end electronic then Ultegra Di2 would never happen.

So hypothetically speaking if Sram goes campag way it'll be Sram RED electronic and Apex or Rival Electronic; force will never be electronic.

Alfine going electronic sort of says in a way that 105 will never go electronic.

But again can't say ; ) I'd love if 105 goes electronic. But in my experience of being a geek and buying stuff you NEVER get best of both and value, you get sweet spots such as 105 where value and performance sort of meet in the middle.

  • 105 will go electronic, I reckon, for the price of mechanical Ultegra, once the economies of scale kick when they're selling a lot of Di2. Tiagra: no. At least, not for the foreseeable future. 105 is still pitched a little above commuter spec, which is the Alfine/Nexus market.

  • If they make the lecy alfine light enough. I'll wack a wheel together for my 29er.

If campagnolo don't sort their shit out and produce some lower cost leccy groups then I'll be moving to shimano when the time does eventually come.

What I can definitely said that Tiagra will have the same body style as the 105 et all, especially after Sora have now got the old Tiagra body (which IMHO is an improvement over the original Sora despite not feeling as nice as Tiagra)

Defintely on the CX if the option exist, that if Shimano use the same levers as the road.
