I thought you self-harmers loved talking about chainrings & gearing?

Back in the aeons of time, you had two choices 53/39 or 52/42. I used to swap out the 42 for a 39 and ran that setup for years. On my winter bike I used to run a 50/39 which gave me the range I wanted.
Nowadays I just run a 50/36.

Nowadays I just run a 50/36.
This exactly what I'm going to go with. The only thing I've used my 34T for during probably the last 8 hours of cycling is to get up my driveway.
I'm too heavy/weak to want anything bigger than a 50T.

I've used 52/39 x 12-25, 11-25 and now 11-28 over the last couple of years.
I think I should be on 50/34 x 11-25 for better sprocket spacing (and pretty much the same range). I'll probably have to learn to shift the front mech less.

Just thought of one point- 53/39 is still much more commonly available second hand, I might stay with 130bcd next year for the road bike if a 130 SRM spider comes up cheaply, I can always swap between them as the CX bike and the road bike use the same cranks

^ boast post.
Dammit has ALL the bcds.

• #1159
I might be remembering wrong, but didn't some cranksets come in dual BCD, 110 inner and 130 outer?
-
• #1160
I don't have one of them, anyway, if they do exist and I'm not making things up.

This is why I wont change my 50T. Even if you're pretty anal about chain line you have 120 to 70 Gi to play with. Which is all you need once your momentum is up.

I haz more momentumz.

• #1164
My weight to size ratio is second to none. So I haz better retention of momentum taking aero-ishness into account....
....which doesnt help my climbing.

I'm game. None of this road bike bollocks though.
Just man and grassy bank.

Many Super Record 11 users on here? How much trouble does indexing cause on post 2011 groups? I have read that it requires more TLC to keep tip top compared to others.
I am quite stuck on groupset choice between the big 3 mechanical offerings (Red 2013, DA 9000, SR11) as I don't have allegiance to any of the manufacturers and have found all their hoods to be pretty comfortable over the years. Surprisingly they seem to be available for near enough the same price (Was surprised by SR)
Most recently coming of Sram and have liked it. Cant help but feel that they will release an 11 speed group very soon to match their MTB 11. The reports of unbeatable front shifting (excluding di2) does make it attractive. New DA sounds promising but not loving the crank despite clever chaining combinations.
Group is for an S2 (12) or R3 (12) frame if that makes any difference. Di2 was on the cards but new Di2 seems to be beyond budget and im still wrestling with the idea of adding that level of complication to such a simple machine.
Any honest or experience based input appreciated. Admittedly at this level its hard to avoid the 'emperors new clothes' phenomenon as no one likes to admit the juice wasn't worth the financial squeeze.

I've been running two Campag 11 speed set ups, one Super Record and one Chorus, and have found that once you've got the shifting set up perfectly it requires next to no additional adjustment and just keeps working as you'd expect.

Listen to Andy, he knows what he's talking about.
Andy, are you racing on a 50t chainring?
-
• #1172
Road racing? Then, yes (although I rode just one road race, at Crystal Palace, this past summer).

The slightly tighter tolerances made set-up take a little longer perhaps. But its been solid ever since. I do pamper the bike though.

Thanks for the feedback. Do any of you use KMC chains for ease of maintenance on SR? Does that make for a louder transmission? Also how does the front shifting perform under load?
-
• #1175
I've just ordered a KMC SL11 this morning to replace the existing Campagnolo chain. I'll let you know how it is next week.
I've never had any issues with front shifting, it's always worked exactly as you'd expect, regardless of load.
If it's Campagnolo related, dismiss it as nonsense and head to the pub.
