  • You'd be right. This kind of design would have to be extremely accurate and well made to stay together (in my opinion), also I think that bonded caps are the future as opposed to "added" caps?

  • Bonded caps for sure - the less hardware the better.

I wonder if it would be possible to have an entirely plastic mallet - bond the head to the shaft. I liked whoever's plastic mallet shaft I used and it seemed to stand up to abuse?

  • Was that at souths? It was very strong, but a bit too flexy vertically. I saw him (can't remember his name! Works in a bike shop though) lean on it at one point and it just caved under his weight.

Replaceable caps are better in terms of waste.

  • Yea it was. I can't remember his name either.. urgh. Definitely flexy and not the mallet of choice for an aid to trackstand but it was super light and you got genuine whip on the shot. I liked it.

  • That's Kris. That mallet is fun to play with but definitely not something you'd want for serious games.

  • Put a bolt in the bottom Mo style and it may work?

Otherwise I reckon it'll get real loose, real quick?

As em said it's kris, he works (or at least worked, I've not seen him for
a while) in fenchurch st Evans (his user name here being Evans chris or something like that). It was made from cable ducting.

I think if it was a bit thicker it would still bend, but not as much... Obviously no good for tripods, but I'm sure if you played with it you could cope... Maybe it's the next freewheel?! :)

  • Experimental or just mental ?

  • what would eb the advantage over standard yellow pipe? maybe with a cap insterted inset into it?

  • Experimental or just mental ?

definitely experimental, pretty much replicates what I make, but it would be nicer knowing it was all one piece rather than three pieces screwed together.

  • No screws ! all heat bonded together . How's the head i sent down doing ?

  • I haven't had the opportunity to play with it yet, been really busy, so no polo for over a week (way too long).

    I'll let you know.

  • ooh nice work - is that all mdpe? (regular found pipe)

Have you looked at hdpe or uhmwpe for the end parts?
These could be slightly more resistant to polo-style impacts and abrasion with little / no weight penalty.

  • The white bits are hdpe , it seems very similar to the water/gas pipe we use in terms of wearing out from abrasion and weight wise

  • ^ I can't see that.

okay hdpe (chopping board?) - good work.

I recently contacted a manfacturer of MDPE end caps, which they actually form from the roadside mdpe pipe (since they are a snug concentric fit as sizes go up - 50mm, 63mm etc.)

They said they would need to make custom tooling to manufacture in the lengths we need (standard caps are maximum 100mm long) and would get back with a cost if feasible.

I think they did not take me seriously - they wanted to hear massive volumes.

  • I don't use chopping boards i machine end caps out of solid 65 mm natural hdpe rod . If you want some caps with a step that push fit inside 63mm pipe, in small quantities made up, let me know .

  • Steffen (clöwn) had end caps in the Mo head this weekend in Geneva, which just clip into place, so are easily replaceable. Would be great if they go into production.

  • are they planning on selling heads on their own yet?

  • cheers for mallet head harvey, got it this morning
