  • Going for my first decent length run in what feels like ages later today. Hit a bit of a slump after the half marathons last month so looking forward to getting back to it before my marathon training starts properly.
Looks like a vest and shorts day to me. Rad.

I have been a bit like you after 3 HMs in a month. Need to start marathon training too!

I also had blood blisters in my 3rd and 4th toes after my first and two HMs, I am sure that it was because of the socks. Changed socks for the 3rd and was fine. The funny thing is that the blisters were only on one foot. Some people say that there is a thing called bodyglide and swear by it. Must be like Vaseline though -only more expensive-

  • Why have I started going slower? Answers on the back of a postcard please.

ollie is slowly poisoning your food so he can nurse you back to health in a twisted munchausen by proxy sorta thing.

why do you think tom ended up getting so slow on his bike...

  • Try different socks. Everyone has different preferences and different experiences.

I wear "1,000 Mile" socks - double skinned, either the socklet or full sock version. These seem to prevent any blisters when I'm wearing Brooks Glycerins or Brooks Defyance, but are useless with my Inov8s.

Very much this - I don't get blisters anyway, but the improved level of comfort from investing in good double skinned socks is great.

Currently using Hilly, based on recommendation from someone here (thanks whoever that was, sorry I can't remember).

  • my second choice -no blisterswere hilly. Blister ones thorlo pads

  • Drum n bass or ska punk for running to today?

  • Could work.
Went for a heady mix of Andy C/DJ Hype era rave and death metal for my last half. Gospel might be an interesting new direction.
Also considered audio books or learning french. Does anyone do that while running or would it melt my brain?

  • I only really want to run to cheesy pop at the moment. I don't normally like audio books as I get bored (they go too slowly), I might start listening to Radio 4 plays though.

  • Silence. That is the best thing to run to.
I hate running with music, because eventually I get fed up with it and want to change and that's just an excuse for stopping.
    Anyhow.
Time to start training I guess...

    I hate running with music.

    This, without any justification though.

  • I like a bit of heavy metal on my runs.

This was working well last night...

    ...[/old man].

  • I ran with music once, about ten years ago. Never again.

  • During the summer I dont mind either way. On my long sunday runs. Taking the rare chance to listen to some music is as much the point as running.

During the winter, when I'm running through, snow covered, pitch black woods. Music adds a bit of a manic feeling. Otherwise its downright spooky.

  • I tried running with drum and bass, but they're both really awkward to carry,

  • ba dum tish!

  • Just got back after 7k. Still finding my feet with midfoot striking, calves aren't as painful as previously but it's still a bit of a challenge. Want to build back up to doing 10-15k 3x a week before marathon training begins and the dark nights/weather descend upon us.
Think I'd last about 5minutes without music, no gospel unfortunately today; Weezer, Bjork and Three Trapped Tigers did the job nicely.

  • Socks: I use the cheapest MoreMile ones. But then I've hardly ever had a blister, lucky me.

Music: occasionally when running home and I have the phone anyway.

Anyone doing Surrey League at the weekend? Cafewanda?

  • My knee hurts today. Think it's down to the work I've been doing over the last few days as I woke up hurting as opposed to exercise injury. Didn't hurt while running which is nice at least. Feels like it's just above the kneecap and hurts when I bend my knee fully. Weird.

Haven't googled yet but any running clubs around Muswell/Highgate? Is it worth joining one as running has always felt a very personal and solo thing to me...

  • Highgate Harriers? I've met a few people from there and try seem pretty nice. I would recommend joining a club if you want to take it a bit more seriously as a sport, especially if you want to do proper interval training and race lots. The social side is also a benefit.

  • Cheers, will look into it. Just looking for that little bit of extra motivation to get me through the winter and ready for Paris in April..
Social side of running seems alien to me. Then again, I thought that about cycling til I met you bunch of cunts...

  • Abandoned after 6k this evening, I am weak, WEAK

  • It would appear Synergy is my closest club. Their vest ain't as snazzy as Highgate's though...
Might turn up for a run with both and see what the score is. Interesting that Synergy make you go to an assesment session first to see where you're at etc.

  • Haven't run since the Great North Run. Hips still clicky when I walk, although pain is mostly gone. Also hardly been on the bike. Working too much, sleeping too little, not eating right. Now have a grotty cold that I can't shake. Moving house tomorrow, then going to Abu Dhabi for work for a few days. Routine non-existent. Feeling sluggish and grim. Once all this is out of the way I need to roller the crap out of my thighs and stretch every day, start eating properly again and get some proper sleep so I can ease back into running. Grumble, grumble, grumble...

  • Incidentally, Ed, I was googling tonight and found a ten-bed apartment to rent in Paris. I'm not sure what we're doing yet, but if we take that then there'll be a bed there if you want it. And a metric tonne of pasta the night before. And a metric tonne of beer the night after.
