  • Love my kanadia's I've run Cornish coastal trails in them as well as slushy london roads a day or two after it snowed last year.

Not ideal for normal road running but would be good for running in a soggy park in, the finish of the race I did on Sunday had a 90 bend 10m before the finish line in slick mud.

Wished at the point I'd been wearing some thing more grippy than my go to knackered shoes for bad weather....

  • I bought them after I'd run up and down St Catherines Hill just outside Winchester- a mixture of grass, gravel, and some sections of loose earth mixed in with surfaced paths, which was quite challenging in pure road shoes.

The Kanadia's have a nice tread which grips really well on slightly uncertain surfaces.

  • I'm sorry to hear this, but what even is that?

An Ironman a day for 10 days. Or 2 days, if your patella keeps playing hide and seek.

  • ^ fuckin hell.

reminds me of the md at my last job, he did 5 marathons on 5 continents in 5 days. Pretty high end challenge, but impressive none the less

  • Fail. Limping to the station. Blisters are too painful. Fucksticks.

Bummer. Deca is just insane, sorry you had to pull out. Presumably that rules you out of the piece of string? I'm still hoping to man one of the aid stations.

Challenge Henley was supposed to be my last ever race* but I pulled out on the bike. Not quite the high point I had hoped for.

*at least for the next few years.

Ouch! But blisters heal quickly. You could start up every other day next week?

  • ^^managed a very pedestrian (25min) 5km on the treadmill yesterday without patella going for a wander. Have convinced myself that Piece of String is still a possibility on that basis. Will see how next couple of runs go and then decide - if I don't race, may well join you on the aid station.

I will give it a go. It's very annoying, I think I could've done it if wasn't for the blisters (see also: failing to ride home from the Brighton marathon because I couldn't fit my Sidis on over my blisters).

Do you build up immunity to blisters?

  • Not sure that you do. I have shares in Compeed (not strictly true but I certainly buy enough of the stuff).

Good news. I enjoy reading about these mental length distance runs.
Have you been working on knee strengthening excercises to help your issue?

I seem to have. There are a few areas on my feet that now have some pretty damn hard skin(same on my hands and fingers due to years of playing the drums/guitar).

Where are the blisters? Do you wear any kind of anti-blister sock?

One on my heel, which must've been just above my running sock, and one on the, er, side of the ball of my foot, if that makes sense. The ball one is manageable but the heel one is a bit of a mess. Annoying as I guess it makes my running socks a bit useless with those shoes.

  • You can toughen up your feet with surgical spirit - I used to do this when I did a lot of ballet (we got in trouble if blood from our feet seeped out of our shoes).

And a lot of stretching and foam rolling. The opinion was that the patella was being dragged out of position by a lump in the muscle in the upper leg, which was caused by compensating for a calf injury in the other leg, which was caused by compensating for the back injury that's been bothering me for a few years.

Aim for the winter is to get the back sorted and hopefully everything else will sort itself out.

On the plus side, I never get blisters.

Try different socks. Everyone has different preferences and different experiences.

I wear "1,000 Mile" socks - double skinned, either the socklet or full sock version. These seem to prevent any blisters when I'm wearing Brooks Glycerins or Brooks Defyance, but are useless with my Inov8s.

You'll need to experiment, I guess.

In addition to Hats's suggestions, urea is supposed to help toughen skin. So you need to pee on your feet.

  • Going for my first decent length run in what feels like ages later today. Hit a bit of a slump after the half marathons last month so looking forward to getting back to it before my marathon training starts properly.
Looks like a vest and shorts day to me. Rad.

  • Try lacing the shoes differently.

This actually works. My heels are crap at holding any type of shoe on. Flat bastards. So all my running shoes use a specific lacing pattern to prevent heel rub.

  • Oh, and I find not wearing any socks at all seems to be the best way to avoid blisters as silly as it sounds. Socks were soaked in blood after Bristol half, not worn socks since and not had any trouble..

  • I've found a spot of vaseline is good for blister prevention. Don't overdo it, you don't want your feet sliding around all over the place.

  • Why have I started going slower? Answers on the back of a postcard please.

  • Pee and Vaseline.

  • Ingest or inject?

  • Syringe it into your throat.
