Just ordered some protein powder for my GF to put in home made protein flapjacks for long runs. But I just had a thought - won't the protein denature in the oven? Also does anyone have any good recipes?

Anyone seen any good deals for shoes... I'm not a barefoot runner don't really care to try just yet... My last shoes were 2005 Nike Pegasus... Can get exactly the same shoe for £40 on eBay... Any better or cheaper suggestions?

As a Pegasus user I'm guessing you want neutral cushioning.
SportsShoes.com are darn cheap.
Saucony Progrids are nice. (havent tried these, but other progrids had a really smooth transition).
http://www.sportsshoes.com/product/SAU687/saucony-progrid-echelon-running-shoes/These are listed as neutral. But they do have some support. I have them, and find them to be a fun fast feeling shoe. That still manages to give just enough support and cushioning.

How much do you want the cushioning?
I usually go for the classic 'big boy' trainers, with ample cushioning and support (Mizuno Nirvana, Asics GT, Brooks adrenalin etc.). But I find my feet cope fine in the far lighter, and noticably lower Asics DS, and I love the faster feeling. I am more careful with my gait, in that I dont smash my bulk into my heels so much. But its not much of an adjustment, and it means my knees see zero ill effect from the reduced cushioning.
Tastes in running shoes are horribly personnal though. So that may be massively irrelevent.

Well I think we are similar weights (although I'm more fat less muscle than you) and heights... Don't really run enough to have much of a type though... So I'll give it a go and if it causes pain I'll probably blame it on my lack of fitness rather than shoes at the moment! :)

5 miles round Regent's Park and Primrose hill in the snow. I had icicles in my beard at the end! Nice.

They should at least be good as a second shoe, for speed work and short runs. But I find them fine for longish (10-15km) stuff.

Its -11C here, and dry as a bone. Took my studded winter shoes out Wednesday anyway, and the beat me up some.
Wheres our snow?

No snow at all? Where in norway are you?
We had loads of it in Sweden over xmas, though most of it melted so for parts of my runs there i'd be better off with skates on...

Nope. I'm high the west coast, in Aalesund. So we usually get some sort of downpour 365 days a year. In the winter it just happens to be snow. But we've had blue skies, no wind, and sunshine (well for an hour each day. Its amazing. I'm definitely not complaining. But even the local ski centers are struggling.

Anyone else doing Box Hill Fell Race tomorrow? Should be fun in the snow, especially on the down!

Why do I seem more susceptible to injury/niggles in the cold, especially my knees and ankles? I don't think I'm the only person who finds this.

Very little blood there, so hard for the body to keep warm and mobile?
-
• #4549
Rookie question but is it even worth planning a run for tomorrow if the snow has compacted/gone slick in a lot of places or should I just get down the boozer.

Not sure what it's like around you but running in snow is one of life's greatest pleasures. Get yourself out in the countryside (or at least a park) and enjoy yourself :-)
That said I do try to avoid areas that are too compacted and icy as that only makes life miserable and dangerous. Especially since my trail shoes have almost entirely lost their tread.
Fuck off I'm not that old or broken.
Yet.
