easy all
been following this thread with interest over the last few weeks, just haven't gotten round to posting....
training for an ironman in june so getting back into running after a bit of IT band issues that were knocking me out for a few weeks at a time. got a foam roller and even tho it hurts it seems to be doing the trick. hope to start upping my mileage now.
got marathon in april too so working towards that.
currently knocking 5k's at 21:XX hope to get that down to sub 21 in the next month or so.

To my mind when you reach the half way point in a marathon you're about 1/3 of the way in terms of physical exertion and pain.
Sounds like a nice summation.
I find that even in amazing condition the last 6 miles are shite. So I simply dont do them any more. A half marathon is as much a test of endurance, as most sane people need. Plus you can actually plan and adjust pace. As apposed to simply grtting your teeth and trying not to be crying* too hard when you cross the line.

I nearly did'nt post my post. Its a negative POS. Still its honest.
I'd eat well, sleep well, and stay off alcohol etc. for the 2 months, and give your body a chance.
Try to mix up your distances. Long sunday runs to test yourself. rest day Monday, then a short recovery run Tuesday, mid distance Wednesday, short recovery Thursday, mid distance friday, rest day saturday........ Or something like that that.
May not be the most sensible plan. But its what I'd do. (not that thats worth much TBH)

Sparky, if I recall correctly, you're fairly new to running, so if 15 miles is your longest run 2 months out, I can't see you making it round in any sort of happy state. Can you defer?

Sparky, there's a load of hyper-negative nonsense being spouted around here. If you've run 15 miles, you can easily run a marathon. If you go along with the 'only go up by 10% a week' school of thought, it will take you 8 years to progress to a marathon from a 5km. Or so. One long run a week and a bunch of shorter ones will see you right. Maybe leave the 20-miler for a fortnight, see how you feel. Don't be dictated to by one-size-fits-all programmes.
If you finish a marathon in a happy state, you haven't tried and you might as well not have bothered. You're going to fuck yourself up anyway, do it right.

I like the style of Knightlancer's advice but he's shit at maths.
Adding 10% a week to 5k will get you to marathon distance in a little over 5 months.

I was just being brutally honest. It will hurt.
I think it would have been negative to say he could'nt do it. I was saying he can.
I've been in a similar position (although with experiance behind me). Having totally misjudged what a second child would do to my free time, and losing track of things.

This may just be me but.....
Your brain will use your doubts against you over the last 6. So whatever your prep ends up being. Leave any self doubt, or self pity at home. Set off slow, and keep a strong head.

I think that's the key. I went out after work tonight and did a little run. Also walked to and from work, which is a five-mile round trip. Just need to keep it up, and then take a few cans of HTFU with me to Barcelona.

A 20 minute run earlier this evening. Two pairs of gloves. Warm fingers. Saw the aftermath of a car vs mocyclist at Clapham Common. Driver looked shocked but went to help. Lots of people around, ambulance(s) called. I left them to it.
Hills tomorrow night, possibly, as long as I use the heated gloves as that is more than an hour all told.

Slowly showing signs of recovering pre-xmas pace. Ran 5k Monday night @6:56 min/mile. Lower back still feeling a bit wrong after tweaking something between xmas and new year (not even running, just standing up after using computer) so did an hour on the turbo tonight instead. Result of that - knee hurts.

I start and finish in stoke newington and tend to head to the canal / viccy park / lea river, you can make it as long as you need really. It's always pretty pleasant around there, but don't particulary like the canal when it's still dark firstthing in the morning. Don't think it's possible to devise a route without some main road / pavement bits though

You are Teenslain or fruitbat and ICMFP.
I'd strongly advise against it, but then I'd advise anyone who hasn't been running for a few years against running a marathon, I jumped into one too quickly (6 months after my first half) and despite a pretty good adherence to a beginners training schedule really struggled on the day and it put me off running for a long time.
To my mind when you reach the half way point in a marathon you're about 1/3 of the way in terms of physical exertion and pain.
