  • Thanks! This is what I'm trying to do, alternate the runs between a light jog and a fast 35 minute run to see if I can get closer to that 10km, on the light run I do a bit of interval but still I'm miles away.

If you're just trying to achieve a distance, I'd concentrate on finding a comfortable pace, and slowly increasing distance. I'm no expert though its just from my own experiance (I hate interval training though).

The other reason for the run is that i really really really enjoyed my run on sunday, it wasnt easy (i set off at 1pm) so was very hot, but i was in the zone almost the whole way.

Had one of these runs on Sunday. Was meant to do about 10 km off-road (had to get to in-laws for dinner). But took the long way around as I felt great, and increased it to around 17 km.

  • only website i can suggest is http://www.runningforfitness.org/calc/rp.php , but thats more for splits for training/racing.

alternatively you could go to a local club trianing session on tue/thu/sat of any of the big london clubs and people will advise.

  • I'd add a +1 to smallfurry.

the other thing i might advise is to try doning a long slow run at a different time, when you dont have a deadline to finish by, plan out a route of 10k which is out and back so you dont pass your front door, and just set off, keep relaxed and plod along, if you have cycled more than an hour, which i presume you have, have confidence that your body is well used to fuelling itself for that long. once you've done it once, you wont look back!

  • I'm getting really pissed off with my motivation. I cannot seem to kick myself out the house any more even though I have just finished work for the summer, and have plenty of free time. I got sick a while back which stopped me and since then I just seem to find every excuse not to go. It is strange because I love running.
Maybe it is because I hate the heat?

  • youve got to love running to bother doing it

  • oh just read the bit about you loveing running sorry

  • i hate it, knackering and slow.

stand up, put on running kit, put on shoes, have a glass of water, get out there.

you'll kick yourself for not having gone out earlier!

Get out to the park, there's girls in shorts!

  • Not here there aren't. In the UK I think at least 35% of races are girls. Here(Poland) less than 5%!
Usually I buy a new pair of shorts or somthing and I get back into it, but it is 30 degrees outside and I am procrastinating again!
Thursday - I WILL go on thursday! It is my last chance before my family visits on Friday.

  • I struggle like mad to increase my pace though. So I may not be the best person to advise.

For beginners I'd advise just trying to run for longer (time, not distance) for the first few months. Doing this conditions the body to running and will bring about improvements in speed naturally.

I've heard far too many accounts of newbie runners starting speed work in the first 12 months then ending up with a chronic injury.

  • I don't suppose anyone in South East London would want to run with me once or twice a week? I really can't get myself to do it by myself, it would be nice to have someone expecting me.

  • Nhatt..... defs keen. Brixton, 2 laps of Clapham common and back is just over 11km. I need to do some training. Desperately.

  • planning on going for a sweaty wheeze round the river at lunchtime. not looking forward to it really. last time i went for a midday run i was still sweating though my shirt an hour after my post run cold shower.

I run round the bridges (Vauxhall-Waterloo-St James' Park) every day..... c.5 miles - did it yesterday at noon, returned home drenched... but felt ace after that ice cold shower.

PM if you/anyone else wants someone on that sort of loop to go for a run with. I'm usually flexible as work from home most days.

    Up the runners!

  • I just ran 2 miles.

    2 whole miles.

    I'm rather proud of myself.

  • ^ Ace.... worst bit is always the first couple of weeks... then it's just.... addictive.

Just back from my daily run, managed squeeze a third of glass of fresh sweat out of my T shirt... yum yum...

    :-)

  • i'm debating whether or not to go for a run now. i'm hurting a touch from consecutive runs and swims the last three days and it's hot and humid out there... on the upside i'm sure i'll feel good about myself if i do....

    what to do?

    fuck it, i'm going.

  • ^Yay !!!!

  • shamed into it by nhatt and bagheera. sweet! did a very sweaty-faced plod round the circuit made up of blackfiars and westminster bridges. still not got the love for it yet (it's still a massive chore) but my sandwich tastes 100% better as a result of having done it.

  • I wanted to go for a run tonight, but my legs might hurt too much. I might go for a walk, and if I feel it, start running after I'm warmed up.

  • I'm flying to Spain tomorrow to do this...

this also looks awesome. i thought to myself yea next year, then i saw how much it costs. eeesh, im out.

  • also, there is a mountain bike trail round my way (bristol) called te timberland trail which forms the basis of the bristol bikefest course. i used to ride it all the time in my mountain bike days. i ran it the other day and it was so much more fun on foot than on a bike... off to leigh woods on sunday to run "the bench" and other such treacherous trails. ace.
