hmm i quite like the idea of a sub 3 marathon...
no idea if its possible though, managed to do a 19.05 5k today which i was pleased with, reckon i cold push it harder, and was fine afterwards, according to the mcmillan calculator that means it is technically achievable but i don't think i have enough time to translate that to a marathon as its more that 8 times further and the one i'm doing is in late September.
will try to break 40 minutes for a 10k next week and think more from there.
think anything sub 4 hours is respectable, like the idea of not having to run for as long that's for sure!

Sub 3 is going to be a longer project for you, go for 3.30 this September, sub 3 next. If you break 40 mins in your 10k you'll be sure you can manage it.

I can just brush sub 40 for 10k, yet there's not a hope in hell I could do a sub 3hr marathon....... get bored with my own company after 45 mins running and I have to stop to:
1) talk to someone
2) letch at someone
3) watch the boats go by
4) have a quick Tommy
5) er... you get the idea.... -

woot, 2nd in 34.26, picked uph £35 vouchers and bottle champagne. http://twitgoo.com/14l4qd
very happy after rocky last couple months, inc no running for month with calf tear then virus/throat infection, followed by month of easy runs and feeling crap.

Nice one Dale- especially good coming after your illness. Glad to see you HTFU'd.
In other news- I bit the bullet and bought some running shoes yesterday.
I am, officially, going to give this running thing a go.
My target is to do a proper distance triathlon and not utterly humiliate myself- so I am guessing that I should be training for that distance, i.e. 10K?
Or is the idea to train for a longer distance as you'll have swim and run before pulling the trainers on?

Congratulations Dale - good time!

I've been doing the C25k (couch to 5k), there's a pretty good free podcast with music and tones to tell you when to run faster/slower..
I believe they also do a C210k

I dream of a 3 hour full too. Not quite there yet - I did a 1:41 mountain half and a 44 minute 10k but failed miserably at the marathon(3:54) I was sick so I guess I have an excuse. Going for 3:30 in september and maybe 3:15 next spring - it depends on training.

cool, welll did a 41 minute 10k, 18 mile slow run this weekend took 2hours 45minute, going to have a crack at full marathon distance this weekend, it that a bad idea?
will be running and going to the gym less during this week to make sure the overall increase in mileage is compensated.
not trying to do it any particular time, but i think in order to do a circa 4 hour run i need a goal and a bit of a motivation otherwise like bagheera i struggle with getting bored, although i really enjoyed my ruin on sunday and think my feet are now hard enough not to give me too much bother.
12.5 weeks to go, realistically would be ecstatic with 3.30, dream world would be 3.15.

just do the wii running game
you don't have to interact with the human race that way@ ed how do you find it affects your " cycling muscles " do you feel strains in calves / hamsters ? my legs don't really seem like they'll handle running much these days after a long walk my calves are tender the next day they are just not used to bi-pedal motion

Started running again last month. My routine is Mon-Fri mornings for 35 about minutes, I'd like to build it up to 10K eventually but my best effort so far has been 7.2km, according to the machine, it is starting to feel like I've hit a glass ceiling, suggestions on how to increase speed/stamina are welcome.

I find running compliments my cycling by using a slightly different muscle group. You just need to get used to running.
I buggered both legs up on the bike a couple of weeks ago. But found that light runs were fine. Going on these runs got me back in the saddle quicker. The opposite applies when preparing for a run. I can keep my fitness up, without straining my legs too much, by cycling instead of running.

Sounds like you are trying to increase both speed and distance at the same time. I'd alternate between fast 5km's (working to increase speed) and slower jogs (working to increase distance).
I struggle like mad to increase my pace though. So I may not be the best person to advise.

18mile is a long run, especially at just below 3hrs. very few elite marathon runners would train over full distance. i severely doubt you will get any benefit other than increasing chance of injury.
this is from a junk mileage king, in the past ;) -

Thanks! This is what I'm trying to do, alternate the runs between a light jog and a fast 35 minute run to see if I can get closer to that 10km, on the light run I do a bit of interval but still I'm miles away.

this is from a junk mileage king, in the past ;)I know what you mean, i'm basing my training on a lot of what http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/ who advises long runs should be at maximum 45 minutes over target time.
i just want to see how it feels, i'm aware that i need to concentrate on avoiding junk mileage as much as possible, so have been doing my commuting jobs as a kind of fartlek training, and doing a few speed runs, but basically i'm making it up as I go along., so if you have any free/cheap sources of advise on how to train then please point em in the right direction.
The other reason for the run is that i really really really enjoyed my run on sunday, it wasnt easy (i set off at 1pm) so was very hot, but i was in the zone almost the whole way.
Basically it's better than any drugs i've done.

@ Dicki
I find that running isnt improving my cycling as much as i would like, i know i'm very fit at the moment, but i dont feel that i'm improving my cyclign at an equal rate to my running.
but then i shouldnt really expect it to, i'm training for running and not cycling!
I am running two Schwalbe Marathons. How do I train for this?
