After losing about 5 stone since May of this year I'm now starting to get fit again and have started the 'Coach to 5k' series of MP3s.
So far have only done 2 runs this week but am pleased considering I literally couldn't run for a bus 6 months ago.
One thing I have noticed is during the run I'm getting burning discomfort / pain on the front of both shins. It's not intolerable but it's not pleasant. I've heard of shin-splints, I do have correctly fitting shoes appropriate for running. I am stretching my legs after each run. Is there anything I can do to alleviate the discomfort further or is it just a case of my body getting used to a new form of exercise?
Thanks.

Go slow and steady. I had this at first: my fitness got better and I could run further, but my legs hadn't strengthened up, and they started complaining. I had to ease up and keep putting in short runs, then slowly ramp it up over time. It's worth taking this slowly because you'll only have to do it the once.
I did 8 miles yesterday and enjoyed all of it. But this morning's 3 miles felt horrendous. Maybe it was last night's beer, or maybe it was because it was all off-road and up/down hill, which I never normally do.

This is probably shin splints (aka medial tibial stress syndrome), but a mild dose. Things that help in the short term: rest, ice and ibuprofen or another NSAID of your choice. Longer term: stretching your calves, running through it, or see a physio for proper advice.

Thanks Sparky / rwn, I'm inclined to think it is more my legs not being used to this new and alien form of exercise. Am taking it very steady by following the 'Couch to 5k' programme. Bursts of jogging mixed up with periods of brisk walking so it remains manageable but as you get fitter over time there's more running and less walking fast.
I'll do another one on Christmas morning as I did one this evening and see how it goes.

VU - sounds like shin splints, RICE will help, maybe try some compression socks or just leggings if that's a bit too much - they help to limit the vibration you experience, particylalrly as your a bigger chap (just guessing here but if you've lost 5 stone there is preumably a large frame to hang that much off!!) so there's more too vibrate!
Just did a loop including the first 8 miles of the marathon course. Its quite a long way before you hit cutty sark!
Will do it again tomorrow morning as I'm in blackheath for xmas - part of my mission to be familiar with the whole course - need to beat 3.15!

Proper windy and -2C here yesterday. Did 3k uphill and in to the wind, then 4 coming back. After getting frozen to the bone it felt like flying with the wind in my back and slight downhill. So nice being back home and running in the sticks again

Very pleasant 8 miles this morning, not done that on xmas day before. Semi-rural West Yorkshire lanes makes a great change from famous London. Think I've since undone all the good work, and then some.

9 miles through the mud with the gf in rural Sussex. He sun was out for most of it and I appreciated Xmas lunch all the more!

At my old mans, proper icy roads here. Think I've had too much whiskey to go for a morning run, but if I do, fingers crossed ill stay upright

Did 3hrs, mainly trails, in London's monsoon forests this am. much fun, but tomorrow's run will definitely be shorter. No more than 2 hrs, for sure.

Did my half hour run this morning, still painful shins but chopped over onto running on grass to try and cushion the footfall.
Once I stop running the pain subsides quite quickly. And it wasn't any worse than on Sunday so I consider that a result.
When showering I noticed a lump on my right shin, not pronounced singular veins but just a lump, this went down after about half an hour. Odd. It was obviously vascular rather than muscular but wondered if this is what happens when you run? Never having done running before like this I have no point of reference.
Cheers and hope you all had a great Christmas Day, I certainly enjoyed cooking then stuffing my face this afternoon knowing that I'd done the run I had planned to.

Managed to get a 6.7miler on some hilly country roads done in just over 50 mins at my parent's on xmas eve, was quite pleased.. have only been running properly for a few months.
Going to try to get up to about an hour this morning to burn off some serious consumption yesterday and prepare for another day of sitting on my arse.

Bugger me. Just went out and managed 1.5 miles before crumpling into a useless ball. Maybe it's all yesterday's booze, or the two helping of roast dinner.
:(

Someone got me ankle weights for Christmas. These things are meant to be dangerous though aren't they?

Don't beat yourself up dude. Probably was too much food and booze but then that's pretty much what Christmas is about (oh and the birth of baby Jesus).
Do a gentle run next time out and if you feel like more then do a bit more.

Roads too icy to run here... Bored out of my head and have itchy feet. Re-runs on the telly just doesn't cut it
