  • Asics Nimbus feels pretty plush and cushioned. Designed for high mileage so should last a good while too. New Balance 880 is very similar. Both are neutral, though feel stable underfoot.
Asics Novablast is crazy bouncy. Have never felt such a difference in how a shoe feels, though have not tried any of the Nike super shoes. However, it does feel a little unstable.

  • Also buy some ice packs to keep in the freezer and ice after every run for a while, makes a huge difference.

  • No tie shoe laces what’s the opinion? My shoe laces are super long

  • Have been wanting to pick a pair up locally but with lockdown ill have to buy em from Wiggle. Half size up or not? I see mixed responses

  • True to size for me. IME similar sizing to Brooks/Asics, if that means anything. (I go half size up for Adidas.)

  • I normally wear Nike

  • I found the Hoka's fitted small so would've gone .5 size up (I wear Nike) but never ran in Hoka as the size I wanted had sold out

  • Hmmm... I'd say similar sizing to Nike as well, but I didn't use Nike as an example cos I've not worn any since they fucked about with Zoom Elite a few years ago. :)

  • That looks stunning – would love to have routes like that close to home! Was thinking of mapping out a circular 25k route in the South Downs area. Will let you know once it's been tried and tested..

  • @PhilPub @Tenderloin @greeno @farewell @Arducius

Thanks so much for the recommendations! I'm trying to track down the HH baselayers, and in the meantime I've ordered a merino baselayer and some slightly lairy armwarmers. Come at me, winter!

  • +2 Hoka Clifton, I just got a new pair after wearing my old ones to death (part of the sole eventually fell off after 2000km). My new ones feel slightly smaller than the old ones (same size) but that may be because the old ones had taken on the fit of a very comfy slipper.

I'd actually like to destroy my trail shoes so I can justify buying some hoka speedgoats, alas my trail shoes appear to be indestructible.

  • Nice - I've recycled a pair of old Rapha arm warmers and they do the job. I find after a while they feel tight around my elbows but by then I'm usually warmed up, so just take them off.
I've also taken to wearing a base layer on top, so I can remove this easily - which sounds a bit weird now that I've written it down...

  • Looks like @Philipflop is on Day Release as an alternative to Meriden. Hope it goes well for you on your adventure.

  • Well spotted! Was supposed to be doing SDW100, didn’t want to waste the training so signed up for Day Release last minute! Finished this morning, 31 miles ATCF in 19.5 hours, 80 miles on the watch so not very efficient at all. Would have been a couple of hours over at least if I’d gone for 45. Brilliant run, no issues and don’t feel too smashed up so pretty happy with that!

  • 31 miles ATCF in 19.5 hours, 80 miles on the watch

    Chapeau!

  • 80 miles on the watch

Nice one! A good days running.

  • Box Hill! Send me a PM and I can send you some routes with massive elevation

I live in East London and commute there weekly

  • Don't forget Epping forest

There is a fell race route of 3 miles which has enough elevation to make it a Cat A race.

I also have routes for a 10 miler and a 15 if you're feeling like going a bit further. It is really nice and muddy at the moment too

  • Will do! That would be great. I've done a few long runs from a tube station in Epping, through the forest and then back down the canal to Hackney, but some more loop routes would be good - the final slog down the Lea is always a bit meh.

Just had the most awkward run of my life... Decided to try a new route from home, and went up to the Leyton/Wanstead Flats - never been before. It was busy on the main paths, so I turned down a little track and into the woods, and right into a lovely clearing full of solitary men, some with their trousers down... I realised what I'd stumbled upon, and tried to take another path out, only to literally bump into a man doing up his flies as another scurried away into the bushes, and then we both got stuck in the mud and I fell over trying to run out... had to run back through the clearing to find a decent path out again – they must've all been so confused. Guess I'll avoid going off piste in that area in the future...

  • Ha! Welcome to Hollow Ponds! (At a guess)

  • 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Judging by your Strava you’re not far from my house

  • @doubleodavey Yup, that's it.. Well, now I know and will stick to dd the footpath from now on! Any other spots I should avoid?!

  • That depends if you've gone out aiming for a fast time, or a good time!

There's a triangle of land owned by Network Rail between Leyton and Walthamstow Marshes. I haven't seen anything untoward, but a friend of mine came across a couple of semi naked chaps up near there. I think it's near the underpass with the fox painted on the walls

  • This sounds brilliant and I'm sad that the most exciting thing I saw on my run last night was a big fat ginger cat "guarding" the pedestrian bridge.

  • First run back after a two week break due to a very mild/caught early case of ITB syndrome. Let's see if the foam rolling, stretching and tens machine helped!
