  • ^ Brilliant. Reading about that last night on sky. He took up running again at the age of 89, what a legend and someone to aspire to.

  • Do they run in Blahniks?

  • Anyone doing the Birmingham half this Sunday? Or anyone done it before? Looks like a bit of a crap climb right at the end...

  • I agree with you. Very gonzo, too glib and much too ready to string together tenuous trails of evidence. I say that as somebody who enjoys barefoot running and thinks there may be a lot in what some of its advocates say, but the Born to Run approach is something Ben Goldacre would take great joy in ripping apart.

That said, some of the chapters made me just want to go out and run.

  • Still on my reading-list... though I've never read a (non technical) sports book before - not sure if I'll enjoy the genera.

  • are people still forefoot/barefoot running? I thought that was over about this time last year. Maybe Marketing haven't got the next big thing out yet.

  • It's my running night tonight, but the coppers want to come round for a crime prevention chat.

This better be worth messing my training schedule round for.

  • Just did my third run in my Nike free's. I bought them because I needed some new shoes to last me until December when I start marathon training in earnest and thought I'd give them a bash.

I don't know if it's because I'm getting rapidly fitter, that I ran without music for the first time in years or what, but I absolutely flew home, it wasn't groundbreaking-ly fast (5.5 miles at 8.45 min miles) but it seemed so easy.

I can tell already I'm going to hate 'normal' shoes when I have to go back to them.

  • I've finally managed a run where I felt nice and fluid again having struggled like a dog since the 3 peaks cross. Could have done without having to leap into a hedge to avoid bastard travellers who thought driving at me would be funny.

  • Can I talk about "Born to Run" now?

    Seriously.

It can fuck the fuck off.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't stand that National Geographic cum Reader's Digest style of story telling, even more so when it presents supposition, speculation and opinion as fact, and draws conclusions from the flimsiest of evidence.

Don't get me wrong - Some parts were good, in that they were very readable and enjoyable. But the masque of whimsy was just too thickly applied.

yeah sure you can, Im on it now, near the end.

loving the counter cultural references, the rock and roll ness of it, but Im a sucka for all that U.S Beatstuff, Dharma Bums is one my favourite books ever,
now you mention it, yeah it is trashy, without crafted characterisation.
but there are sections that ignite the imagination, just loved the part about when youre a kid- and run around like fuck, just for the sheer feeling of it, I usd to do this and constantly get bollocked for it at school,
been recreating that enjoyment feeling when training recently, never do care about timing etc but its making my actual races faster,
tonight- trails on talbot heath, long hill reps, 5,5,5, hour running then went to try the track in the dark--woooo dont be afraid of the dark

Barefoot running is the new fixed. Also the old fixed. With all that implies.

I think the're great. About to order the Free Run Plus as i think the 3.0's are a bit too 'light' for my running style. i think i need just a wee bit more coosh.

Having said that,I only run about once a week so I dont really know what Im talking about.

Why will you have to go back?

nice, gonna get me a barefoot then for sure. will it mean running in tight jeans and aviators tho?

interesting reading, bit of a sales pitch tho:

  • Is that your pace throughout the course of the 5k? If so try neg splitting: take it easy for the first half, work to hold your average split for the next quarter, and then work all out for the final quarter.

In the first couple of runs it looks like you faded badly towards the end, neg splitting should give you a much better approach to pacing. Great to see progression though!! :)

    • edit, reading fail, although even if those are 5x1k rep times I'd still aim to keep the splits as consistent as possible throughout.
  • Right, this should by rights go in a general training thread, but this seems to be the closest we have.
The following is my "standard" week, which I always try to follow- but I will miss things out as work (usually) or social events (sometimes) demand.
Sunday- 60 miles club run on the bike
Monday- 16-20 mile commute, hours walk at lunch, hours run in the evening
Tuesday 16-20 mile commute, hours walk at lunch, hour in the gym in the evening
Wednesday 16-20 mile commute, hours walk at lunch, hours run in the evening
Thursday 16-20 mile commute, hours walk at lunch, hours gym in the evening
Friday 16-20 mile commute, hours walk at lunch, hours run in the evening
    Saturday DIY
So a typical week would be 80 miles commuting and 60 miles at pace cycling, 25 km of running, and two hours in the gym, maybe one more hours worth of gym on either Saturday or Sunday.
The intention is to be generally fit, to get faster on the bike, and to be able to complete the Roubaix and a couple of Triathlons in 2012 without shaming myself.
    What should I stop/start/continue?
And yes, adding some swimming would be a start from the Triathlon point of view!

  • Whee! Just did a wee 4.5 mile run at an almost constant 7.7 mph (that's a pace of, um, 4.51 min/km); graph is nearly flat. Averaged just over 200 steps per minute, as well, which is what makes the difference, I think. Like spinning in a low gear. That's my best pace for the distance in Vibrams yet.

  • Decided to try some plain and simple barefoot running. 3 mile run around Brixton. Forgot to take my phone with me, so I can't verify that I did it faster barefoot than in Vibrams, but it felt that way. Think I'm going to alternate longer runs in the Vibrams with shorter barefoot runs (well, until it becomes too cold to run barefoot, anyway).

  • first xc of season has left me on crutches.

damage done on first lap but after a few hops the adrenaline/endorphines convinced me it was ok and I ran a strong race.

started aching after so strapped it up and went to minidrome, when that finished couldn't walk to get out, hopping a struggle, kind chap stove me n Gf to A&E.

so I'm out the game for a while, hopefully just soft tissue hospital said. more painful than recent broken toe by a long way. can't sleep. Ho hum.

  • sorry to hear it Andy-
dont know what to advise- massive lemsip ingestion for the muscle relaxant plus painkillers- gws

  • Yeah, rest and the like. Fucks up my planned road / mtb / bmx 3 day event that was this Sun to Tues too. Week off work booked as it's half term, now stuck on crutches.

Oh well, have a good week dude, there's probably been some karma involved for me somewhere, or someone is getting slightly more good luck on my account...

  • Why will you have to go back?

I'd be too concerned that as my technique breaks down, and it will, the only other option would be walking with no option of jogging or clumsily heel striking my way to the finish.

I only bought them to stop me over training between now and December, otherwise i'll hit 20 miles between now and then as i did for my last marathon, capable of running reasonably comfortably at 7 min mile pace for up to 10 miles, running 50 miles in a week and be in injury hell by the time I get to April, no the next couple of months is about shedding as much weight as possible, improving flexibility, strength and speed, distance start in December/January.

In other news I ran my first sub 8 min mile commute of the year!

5.2 miles in 41 minutes, so only just and annoying close to the sub 40 minutes but not bad considering that includes stopping at some traffic lights along the way.

  • Sorry to hear that- hope things heal fast.

I just ran my 100th mile of 2011, which is around 90 miles more than I ran in 2010:

Lets see if I can notch up 100 by the end of June in 2012

  • I did 8.10 minutes per k in the forest today, thats with navigation on a 9.0k course
if that means anything, or matters to anyone in the universe
    looking at this for sunday

I did my 100th mile of 2011 on Jan 5th. Just saying, is all.
