Ran eight miles in Vibrams, yesterday, which is a little over twice as far as I'd ever run in them before. Wasn't sure that was very smart, but feeling fine today.

Eden Half:

That was surprisingly fun - hilly, with lots of varied terrain, and excellently marshalled.
I was 10 minutes ahead of my target time, although (as ever) I reckon I could have gone faster. Still, it's a good baseline for next year.
Do you think that if you weren't so overweight you might have done it a bit faster?

How did it go?
not as well as i'd hoped, nailed it on through the first half for a 3.35 but ran out of legs at about 19 miles and just as they came back at about 24m got the worst stitch i've ever had and had to walk, run, walk, run for about a mile.
Came in at 3.46, felt like I was bent double but didn't look that bad when i saw a photo. knocked 4 minutes off my last time but was hoping for more.
on the plus side, seems to have completely cleared my cold.just off for ibuprofen and whiskey now.

Is anybody on here running the New York marathon or know anyone who is this year? My NY marathon 5 borough gloves have worn away and want to get my hands on/in another pair. I'd obviously pay plus buy a beer in return! (the new york road runners want to charge £48 postage on $10 gloves....)

Thought I'd be too stiff and tired after TNRC but had a lovely wee 4 mile run in the Vibrams before lunch. More concerned about technique than distance at the moment.

Would anyone like a free place on the Maidstone half marathon on sunday?
I was meant to do it, but lack of training, fucked feet, a sore knee and a general dislike of running if it doesn't involve a cricket ball mean I won't be taking my place.
Details hereRoute Description
The course is a challenging circular route, leading slightly up hill for much of the first half through Bearsted and Hollingbourne, before climbing sharply to the Pilgrims Way at about the 7.5 mile mark. The route then undulates continuously along the Pilgrims Way to The Black Horse Pub at Thurnham at approximately 10.5 miles. The route then drops down to Bearsted Green at approximately 11.5 miles before climbing gently to Weavering Street then gently falling to the finish in Grovewood Drive South. Each mile will be clearly marked and there will be three water stations located at approx. 4 miles, 8miles and 11 miles plus one at the finish area.
If your interested PM me and we can sort out getting your details to the organisers tomorrow.

I'm really tempted on vibrams. should i just get them then start with forefront running, or just carry on in my normal running shoes until i've got the technique set a bit?
-
• #1792
You can't use normal running shoes to learn the kind of technique that goes with Vibrams or pure barefoot running. You'd be better off running barefoot on grass or bare earth if you want to try it out without shelling out for Vibrams. Some people just stick with pure barefoot and never look back (in which case you've saved some cash).
If that doesn't appeal, try running in some low-top Chuck Taylors.

could certainly do barefoot in the park a few times, worth a try. cheers for the tip!

Excuse the irritating website address, but this site has some useful info about transitioning to barefoot/minimal footwear. Not sure I agree with all of it (cadence etc) but some food for thought none the less.

Make sure to try some Vibrams on before you purchase- I am a 44, but in Vibram world that means I need size 42.
-
• #1796
And different Vibrams fit differently. Fitting is a must so you know the type that best fits your foot.
-
• #1797
The difficulty with vibrams is that they feel very alien when you first put them on, even if you have the correct size. I regret not getting mine a size smaller just because I didn't really understand what I was doing at the time. I think the general recommendation is: if in doubt go for the smaller size.
-
• #1798
Yep, I second that.
I just went for a quick run before the sun vanishes, first run for a couple of weeks, felt like I could have carried on for another lap which was nice- that said I was going slow:

If I go for a run after dark I have to dodge the doggers in Dulwich Park

here's something to aspire to
"A 100-year-old Briton has become the world's oldest marathon runner after finishing a race in Canada."
I'm doing the Greensand in two weeks.
