  • Hey J, I was going to ask you about this as know you've dealt with quite alot, I am quite nervous I have to say.... i'll have to be firm wih him..... did you pay upfront or after?

@ Muleboy, don't think so, he was a pre-war race winner and bought allin cycles, not sure when though, must of been 40/50s.... he wasn't reallb a frame builder himself though..... but he did make a few. I think the main frame builder came from bates.... but not sure

  • the guy who built these went on to work for claud butler
i think allins and claud butler ( the company ) ( don't know if there was actually a bloke called claud butler ) joined forces at some stage in the 60 / 70's
there is definatekly a link between claud butler and allins

  • one of Allin's main frame builders had come from Claud Butler. Claud has a bro called Geoffrey

  • The more I read everyones comment the more I think selling this once it's finished will be a bad move.... it appears to be quite rare, i'm not sure how much caz knows but he was telling me how uncommon it was the other day, he even tried to offer me dosh for it :)

that shouldn't be your reason for keeping it, i dont think unless you were always going to hang it your wall as a piece of art

  • it would be a shame to sell such a nice frame

  • No don't worry i'm not going to sell her, i've had it for over a year now so it's stuck with me!

I have decided to source original late 50's parts and restore her to her former glory... i have been trying to make inroads into finding out what colour she was originally but think I will just go with what I like, the allin order book/frame log is still in existance, hopefully it will also explain what or who it was built for... it certainly isn't a path racer as have found photos of one made around the same time as this... would be lovely to find out it was commisioned by a pro-racer of the time :)

So, colours chosen (I think) are grey and white (head tube in white and seat tube with white band/s) with either dark grey or gold lug lining..... i've got until saturday to decide as thats when it gets dropped off.

I'm not sure what transfers to go for thiugh, these are from a 1950's path racer -

and these are from a 1954 stan butler special -

    Decisions decisions....

  • Kinda this colour -

  • jubilee clip?

  • Jubilee clips are shiny prav.. aren't they?

    Like this -

Or, are you suggesting I hold it all together with zip-ties and jubilee clips? :)

  • Probably not a good idea.. just lash it up with some twine.

  • Fix it and sell it Toby. If the one below is worth £375 then you should get a fair whack for it.

The owner thought it was worth £375. Everyone else thought it was worth £92, which is closer to the mark, I think.

  • BoBoB- These have Allin transfers http://www.hlloydcycles.com/page6.htm
If you haven't already taken your frame in, I have someone I can highly recommend to do the repair and paint. Pm me if you're interested.
It's a very nice frame, don't let it go.

  • Hi bonk, it goes in on saturday at a cost of £175 for thr replacement seat tube, respray, re-badge and lug lining.... the good thing about vaz is that I can cycle to his workshop so avoid hefty courier charges... how much does your man charge and whereabouts is he?

I've been trying to get on to the H Lloyd website for days to view the catalogue... it only allows me to see the list without images???

Right, we'll if he's that close then it's probably a better option. My man is way up north.
You're probably just as well phoning Nick from Lloyds up. Has to be before 11am though, otherwise you've no chance.

  • you sold this yet boobies?

  • nah, it's off to vaz tomorrow, I think witcomb are replacing the tube and then mario is doing the paint job... Am nervous but he doesn't take payment until it's finished so I can always moan if it's shite...

  • how on earth does one get a seat tube removed without actually taking the bike apart completely
seems like a bit of a kerfuffle

  • Not entirely sure, I presume they will cut a chunk out the middle, heat up the lugs so the old braze melts away and it can be pulled out... does that sound about right?

It does seem like a pretty full on job but are only charging £60 to replace it. I suppose if you have the tools/knowhow etc

  • thats fine for removal don't forget a full length tube has to go back in the gap, the rear triangle bottom bracket would have to be removed surely
don't get me wrong i do believe it can be done and definately think it's worth doing but can't quite get my head around how they will
in jig / melt braze and remove
    i

  • Beats me :)

I'll ask mario if he knows

  • I'd love to see a vid of the process! Unlikely, though I should think they would prefer secrecy.

Geoffrey Butler and Claud Butler were no relation. Or was that^ a joke?

  • should of sold it.

  • And why is that you mo-fo-ho?

  • you will not re-coup money on frame and there is a good chance you will break it again.
