When I come back to Polo sometime next month it'll be with flat bars and riser stem. I previously had a 0deg stem and 1" rise bars.
My riding position has hardly changed, I've done this to move the lever more inboard to prevent knuckle crushing

You can get more sweep on a bent bar than a flat one.

Not sure I'd agree with that as a theoretical statement, though it does seem to be the case that if one wants a lot of sweep on a bar, the market tends to limit your choice to risers.

yeah the lever clamp + lock on grip measure up at 15cm width whereas the flat section on my risers is 13cm, so basically what snoops said, I wanna avoid having the lever at some weird angle.
might try flat bars and flip my stem so position will be more or less the same.
cheers

If your hands end up in the same position, then the handling will not be changed. But riding flat bars was more than about positioning, for a while there it was a way of life.

So it anyone still using Marino?
We've had some shocking builds from them to the point where the seat stay is so far out we couldn't set up V brakes. They replied saying it's within the acceptable amount of error and are ignoring emails.
Anyone had and good or bad builds? Just want to know whether to give up on them entirely or if they've improved. -

Mines been fine but was an early one, maybe he's got people working for him now that ain't as not bad at putting a frame together. Ain't all the hijas marinos underneath?
-

Mine is fine. Brake mounts far better aligned than my Chaiwanese and somewhat 'respectable' Cotic.
I've only worked on a few Marinos/Hijas but in my experience huge manufacturers and custom builders also make mistakes. The difference with most custom builders is that they will work with you to resolve them. And with big manufacturers, a reputable shop should catch those problems before they even reach a customer.
IMO Marinos/Hijas are amazing for the money, but if he's going silent and ignoring errors then they'll probably become less ubiquitous.

Paddy and me (Brizzle) both got a Hija from the last batch just after Xmas. No problems with them that I can see so far and considering the price I think they're pretty impressive. Alejandro has also been good with his communication and I reckon if a rogue frame did slip through the net he would sort it out.

If you're looking for a new bike you could look at Mielecs too. Scott's from up here is really light compared to my marino, if it holds up OK it might be my next bike, although owning 2 Mielecs might be a bit excessive. Main problems have been communication and things taking longer to arrive than stated.

Cheap too, very cheap.

Ta all.
I've already spoken to Alej. All is awesome with Hija, he has a great relationship with Marino and works him extra hard.
I'm talking about finding someone to build custom frames in Melbourne for the bike shop I'm at. I think he's about 50/50 with his builds but the last one was so bad and he basically said tough shit. Minor imperfections happen, and I'm sure he's right about having a margin or error, but when you can't run a brake that has to be outside what's acceptable.I gathered the Mielecs weren't too close to the specified geo?
The position of your bars (height/reach/sweep) will have a bearing on the handling, but there are a multitude of ways to alter these factors.
E.g. risers and a low stem may well end up with your hands in the same position as flat bars and a high rise stem.
