  • yeh but the front knows the rear is there and gets lazy

  • So the only possible reason you could have to remove the rear brake, IMO, is to make your bike lighter/simpler or to stop hand fatigue caused by poor maintenance/poor quality brakes.

  • I'm using dual avid bb5s I ordered some new pads and will give everything abit of a service, I switched back to just back hydraulic which I like but I might stick it on the front to try anyway tonight

So not because someone's fancy rear brake broke and you wanted to help them out?

  • Look, do you want it back? I have offered before and you said I can keep it until I sort out my replacement part. You never mentioned you would troll me about it!

  • The internet changes my mind.

  • Snoops, I have your DX if you want it back.

  • I'll have it. Fuck yes DX.

  • Thanks Mrak, bring it to polo whenever.

  • i have just read my calipers have "infinitely variable spring tension" i bought them second hand so maybe the tension is has been wound up, il check that tonight

  • My DX/short pull lever combo is awesome... No pain... Ever... And my bike stops... When I want it to...

  • I've not found front brake only to be a massive change, as I've been riding fixed up to now and have only had a freewheel for the last month. I guess this means I'm already used to doing the majority of my stopping with the front wheel, and not skidding the back end about much.
So far I've only played in Sheffield on the freewheel, and we tend not to have the most hectic of games. It remains to be seen how I get on in higher-paced games. I am planning to get some bosses put on the back though, and will end up with a dual brake set-up. Guess I'm still experimenting...

  • I don't even maintain them... So awesome...

  • For Nokon, with v-brakes, is this the set I want?

Considering I already have flexi-noodles, should I replace them with the nokon ones, or use the nokon in addition to that?

  • I'm running about 70/30 front heavy now, and that 30% on the rear is really bloody useful, I can still throw my weight back and slide the rear if i want, and i don't end up jack knifing like emmet.

I also need 2 brakes cos I'm twice the weight of emmet.

  • Yeah - I weigh around 14 stone, and my bike is heavy and I like to mug rear-brake only players with sharp decelrations and having a dual brake really helps.

More than that though, I find with a well set up dual brake you can lock either wheel at will according to weight distribution. I can skid or stoppie-turn my rear wheel around, which is especially useful when coming back into goal keeping position, but also in dead-ball/corner situations. Also, I have a modestly priced set-up with a shitty promax lever and never have hand cramp. Minimal spring tension on the calipers helps.

Having said all of that though, I play in Birmingham and the standard isn't high and most people have piece of shit bikes, so the benefits of a good set-up are pronounced.

  • 2 Brakes. Adjust accordingly to suit the surface and the mood you're in.

  • Mine are back heavy, but if I pull harder then the front stops fine, I can do awesome skids & stop in a straight line too & they're easy on the wrists

  • i switched to front brake only about two weeks ago and i love it. you have to adjust how you brake (eg pulling the lever, when to pull the lever etc) but it really helps. i switched because when i had dual brakes it was around 80% front heavy. also my rear disc caliper was breaking and its alot easier for me to just run a front brake.

  • i think that FBO makes you play differently and that can be a good thing. However you set your bike up it makes you play different. Sometimes i think we naively imagine we are setting the bike up so it adjusts to our style of play, when in reality the bike is setting up how you play. Sometimes the machine should do the talking and you should adjust, you might thank your machine after. I know emmet does. I liked FBO alot, but then i also like dual.

  • you guys are SO not on trend. Brian Dillman runs a system with a lever for the front brake and a hydraulic push button for the rear brake. Or so I've heard.

  • I heard the rear brake is heel operated, actually.

  • it's all about neural implants next year
