  • @Tim: players have to come from someone's youth set up.

For sure but is the investment of such large sums of money necessary? Are top prem clubs collecting talent that doesn't get a chance to play and fosters the all too common attitude of today's professionals who are content with bench warming to playing first team matches week in week out? Leave it to the lower leagues.

  • Err....cos we're talking about the 'Youth System/Academy'...

Rooney, Rodwell....that would be valid as they were great youth players that came through and were sold for MEGA money

Shelvey you bought from Charlton(I think?) when he was 17/18 and Spearing was shit, is shit and you got a family pack of McCoys and a new minibus for the under 9's for him

Are you really that soft in the head? The main reason you've produced that much is down to finance. You lot aint got a fucking pot to piss in. None of those players and you'd be Rymans league.

Turning profits from such shot players sounds like good business to me.
Exactly how many teams are doing mega work in the Prem? United haven't produced anything in recent years miles ahead of us: Evans, One of the fat twins?
    Chelsea? Citeh?
Arsenal have done alright as have Southampton (remebering they were relegated and nearly wiped off the map) have done really well. If you turn a slight profit from sales, you're doing it right. We've had the current system in place for about 4 years. Exactly what do you think is going to happen in such a short space of time?

  • Just got this on my Fifa career (obviously managing Liverpool)

  • It's a fucking shocker

The type where I wince, make a noise through clenched teeth, laugh then rewind.

Mirallas isn't even looking at the ball. Good work.

    Get in!

Joe Williams red card - YouTube

Nothing wrong with that tackle. You'd get worse in the Sunday pub leagues.

  • Just out of interest though john have any clubs made a viable go of a youth team over a longer period of time than a couple of years?
West brom are finally seeing a couple of decent players come through after decades. Chelsea stole one of them for peanuts. Saido looks tasty but is in reality being over hyped. Apart from economies of scale for large clubs I think it's a false rd for most clubs to ........blah blah . Haven't i/ we been down this rd before?

Surely Southampton? Have had a consistent academy for the last 20 years or so...

Shearer, Wallace brothers, le god, Kevin Phillips, bridge, Walcott, bale, chamberlain, blackstock, best, surman, lallana, ward-prowse, shaw, chambers....

Consistent stream and is more than self funding, even if some are championship quality.

  • Guardian sourced Spurs story

I would say defeat at the weekend against United and it will be time to visit the Job Centre

    You forgot Craig Maskell.

  • The boro academy has been spitting out lower end champ players for the last 20ish years.

    Feast your eyes

At least we give em a game in the first team.

it might just be easier if some big team swooped and bought the youth academy coaches rather than the players

and playing those academy players has got you where again ?

    good work, top academy

  • The list missed Phil Stamp.

and playing those academy players has got you where again ?

It's been a source of pride and some income for us. We play a lot of acadamy products, and are proud of it. It's makes us proud.

It's has got us to the lower end of the Champ.

    good work, top academy

Thanks you, it is a source of great pride.

  • ahh pride
is that the equivalent of a trophy these days ... like 4th place and winning the possesion ?

  • you do have nice kit though to be fair

  • AVB evens to go now. Tits.

Certainly seems to have done a decent job of alienating himself from almost everyone at the club. Which is a shame because he's a good manager.

  • Which is a shame because he's a good manager.

Is he? I would suggest part of being a good manager is keeping some form of personal relationships going. This is the 2nd time he has done this.

  • you do have nice kit though to be fair

    Another source of pride.

  • hows the kit deal / sponsorship ?

    lucrative ?

"My club has more acadamy products in the PL than your club....ect ect"

Yes, he's like the anti 'Arry... Maybe coach is a better word. Can't help thinking he would be better in a technical director role.

  • Ramsdens pawnbrokers. I'd rather an international charity or a tyrannical government but we're building.

Well at least he wouldn't waste clubs money on shit players as a TD.....oh

  • Would seem to be a better 'fit' tho. In my opinion. That is only based on the discussions on this thread and the odd bit of Sky Sports news I see.

  • Is he? I would suggest part of being a good manager is keeping some form of personal relationships going. This is the 2nd time he has done this.

    I agree.

Possibly a good manager in the technical sense but someone who is unable to learn and adapt from past mistakes is a flawed human being.

  • Meh I don't actually think he's bought a single shit player since becoming manager - just that they have bought too many and not allowed a team to form.
