Out of all this, I can't quite believe how many goals Andy Cole scored.

Because Adebayor is (nowadays) fucking shit, which is why he got 1 in 5 last season compared to Defoe's 1 in 2.5.
I think the article is trying to make the point that even if Defoe is scoring 1 in 2.5 he gives so little else that Tottenham would pick up more points on average with a player with a lesser goal scoring record who does more.
But I think you know that and are just being obtuse.

Expecting a 1 in 2 striker to score every other game or a 1 in 3 striker to score every third game is ridiculous.
All strikers are going to have runs where they do not score and it is the sign of a top striker that it is 4 or 5 or 7 games not 15 or 20 or even 40. Failing to score for a month is meaningless.
Its a bit like the one on one Defoe failed to score vs Jussi. That miss says nothing to me about Defoe. If he was capable of scoring every single chance presented to him he would be God and would get 80 or 150 goals every season. What makes him a top striker is that over the course of 20 games or a season he nets at a damn good ratio of goals to games
You're after the poisson variance on small numbers. But essentially I agree

You are basically comparing him to some exceptional players clearly better than him (Owen, Shearer) and to some players who had one (or maybe a few) good season(s).
Basically he is a 1 in 2 or 1 in 3 striker and always has been. 1 in 2 based on starts, 1 in 3 based on appearances including subs. This is basically from his debut for Bournemouth, through to Tottenham and including England.
Is he one of the world's best all round strikers? No.
Is he suited to the modern game / 451? Not particularly.
On what basis is he a streaky striker? On the basis that he is not Ronaldo or Messi, and on the basis that the person making the claim expects his strikers to score every other game without fail.
No, I'm looking at his playing career (02-now) and seeing how often he's in the top 10. twice.
With such luminaries as Peter Crouch and James Beattie. AND DIRK KUYT. -

he wasn't all that bad
played out of position most of the time in benitez's right side attacking slot
still contributed and pretty good as the lone striker when given the opportunity
he could have done a job for rodgers in that first one striker on the books period -
• #90207
So what's your point, Jeez?
-
• #90208
He's right, we're all wrong. As usual.
-
• #90209
I think Defoe is decent. But's it's all irrelevant now that Spurs have the goal machine that is Soldado because he'll hardly get a game.
-
• #90210
lol.
-
• #90211
is he the one who can't score from open play ?
having bale diving in and around the box would have been the perfect foil for his penatly taking abilities -
• #90212
Yep, forgot the lol, thanks. Has Soldado scored from open play yet?
-
• #90213
The article was making the point that Adebayor deserved to be in the side ahead of Defoe
He seems to be making the point that Defoe is not that good, and even though he has a decent scoring record he needs a lot of chances to score them and contributes very little else. The author seems to do a good job of this by using actual numbers. Just because Adebayor turned out to be a bit shit that season doesn't make his points regarding Defoe wrong.

DIRK KUYT.
He loves this city.
-
• #90218
Oh please - let's not discuss Kuyt.

Dirk Kuyt - the guy who is so shit that he has only played 95 times for that shite national who never produce any decent players, the Netherlands?
Righto.
Incidentally Defoe does have a considerably better goals per game international record to Kuyt.
A question for you - how on earth did Defoe get to be so high on the all-time PL list when if you judge him year by year is is so fucking shit?
That's a list of players who've scored 100 goals.
He's played for 10 years or more and scored 10 goals or more per year.
That's how.
Which at 380 games (approx) is approx 1 goal every 3.8 games. -
• #90220
Oh please - let's not discuss Kuyt.
Kuyt was never picked for his goals, goals is all defoe has.
-
• #90221
^^ He was picked for his good looks.
-
• #90222
woof
-
• #90223
He is a goalscorer - the only way to judge him is on his goalscoring record and that proves that he is very good.
Footballs moved on. You can carry a player just cos he scores 10-15 a season anymore, something else is needed. See Darren Bent.

It would be better if we could see how many shots per goal.
o hwait. we can.
http://www.premierleague.com/en-gb/players/profile.statistics.html/jermain-defoeSince 98/99 apparently, he's scored 128 goals from 512 shots.
Adebayor has always been shit.
