The total goals per season stat needs taking with a slight pinch of salt given that Defoe has never been a 100% guaranteed starter in either spell at Spurs (either because of competition, or because of tactical inflexibility).

However, this is key:

His ball retention is also awful. Not very AVB. If only Adebayor would pull his finger out we'd have a credible alternative to Soldado.

I just looked up Torres. 2007-08 in his first season at Liverpool he was a very regular scorer. Arguably Defoe does compare badly when compared to one of the best strikers in the world over the last 10 years at the absolute peak of his powers. In fact I'll stick my neck out (sarcasm) and say that Defoe is not and never has been the best striker in the world, or even one of the top three.

In his second season at Anfield Torres had runs of 4, 5 and 6 games without a goal. Very comparable to Defoe.

Torres adds much more to a team without scoring than Defoe can... and as Chalfie's link states, Defoe doesn't even compare well to more average premiership strikers, let alone top class ones.

He get's one goal every (approximately) 2-3 games.
But, he takes a lot of chances to get his goals.

I don't think that's streaky.
I think that just means, if the defence he's playing against allows him to get his shots off with a clear view, he may score.

This is a diversion though.
